106 people will be killed in crashes on our streets during the next council term if no action is taken.

This is not a statistic we can accept. Someone is killed in a collision in Birmingham every two weeks, and someone is seriously injured every single day.

That's why today, Better Streets for Birmingham, supported by a coalition of 15 local and national organisations, is launching ten key asks to address the road safety emergency.

We are calling on all those preparing to stand for election in Birmingham next year to commit to practical, achievable steps to make our streets safer.

Our asks include:
- Rolling out 20mph speed limits on residential streets
- Upgrading crossings and cutting wait times
- Enforcing road rules to tackle speeding and illegal parking
- Building a network of safe cycle lanes
- Creating calmer, greener residential streets for communities

We want a city where children can walk to school safely and where our pavements are for people, not obstacle courses.

We are asking 2026 candidates firmly: "Will you make Birmingham’s roads safer?"

Read the ten asks in full and co-sign them to demand a safer future for everyone in Birmingham: https://betterstreetsforbirmingham.org/.../birmingham.../

When children ride bikes, they don’t just grow their own confidence — they bring communities together. The Wee Bike Library creates those moments: kids riding with friends, parents walking alongside, neighbours chatting on the street. Bikes build bridges, and with free access, every family can be part of that journey. 💫

Oh yes, this is how it rocks in the USA. We're not quite so noisy in the UK, but we feel your joy!

Results from a three-year evaluation of on-road (Level 2) training show a clear link between training and increased cycling frequency.

4,655 pupils from P6, P7, S1 and S2, in urban and rural areas across Scotland, participated in an independent study of Bikeability Scotland training over three academic years (2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24).

Findings show:

➡️ Pupils who participate in Bikeability Scotland cycle more frequently after training
➡️ Pupils perform better in related knowledge and awareness tests
➡️ Secondary pupils who’d received training were up to 13% more likely to cycle than those who hadn’t
➡️ Greater impact in areas of higher deprivation – particularly on cycling frequency and ownership

Harry a pupil from Livingstone, describes his experience of Bikeability Scotland: “I thought we would just be doing different games or different activities on the bikes but it was more like what you would actually do on the road or in real life. Teaching you those skills that you actually need.”

London is embracing two wheels like never before.

A comprehensive traffic survey by the City of London Corporation found that the number of cyclists in central areas has jumped by 57% in just two years.

Thanks to expanded bike lanes, an extensive bike-share network, and policies discouraging car use, bikes have now overtaken cars as the most common form of transport in the heart of the capital. 🚴‍♂️📈🌆

Road harm is a political choice. Everybody: every road user, every politician, every voter has a role to play to help make our roads safer.

The Highway Code Rule 72 says that cyclists should usually ride in the centre of the lane.

Here's three reasons why that's a good idea, in 15 seconds...

Riding in the centre of the lane allowed this cyclist easily to anticipate and avoid three collisions in 15 seconds, with other road users who weren't paying attention.

The most important thing you can do to cycle safely isn't to wear a helmet. It's to use segregated infrastructure. When public authorities focus on helmets, they are distracted from the real issues.

18-year study in Scotland finds that commuting by bicycle reduces all causes of mortality.

We've known this for decades. The best investment available in public health right now in the UK is to promote active travel.

Background Despite active travel investment increasing, evidence of benefit is often limited to selected health outcomes and a short follow-up period, and cyclists and pedestrians are often analysed together. We aimed to examine prospective associations with multiple health outcomes over 18 years fo...
