A round up of recent behind the scene activities at Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway:

Our permanent way team are out weekly working on the track and infrastructure, here digging out wooden sleepers previously dropped off with the works train using 6LDA Group 26038 ‘Tom Clift.’ Then the task of sliding in the new sleepers, fastening the metal chair, screwing it down and hammering in the key to lock the rail in place.

Good to see more progress on the Gresley Stock by SRPS volunteers over the last few months:

Gresley Teak coach Third Compaterment ‘TK ‘1002 has visited the Diesel Shed to get lifted and placed back onto its overhauled bogies, followed by the overhauled gangway faceplate fitted leaving some additional parts to go on including rubber bellows.

Alterations to the framework of ex Grangemouth Brake Teak coach brake third compartment ‘BTK’ no. 62515 are under way reverting the vehicle back to original design rather than a tool van and taking shape with newly manufactured luggage doors being trial fitted. A lot of scraping, sanding and painting in the brake cage too (along with relocation of the handbrake!).

Don one of our C&W volunteers who is working on the Grangemouth Brake (LNER 62515) reports he has “come across a door ventilator which is stamped 18248 (also post-1946). Several others from this carriage are stamped 16123 which was its number after the 1946 renumbering, so they are original, but this door, with its slightly fancy "hit and miss" sliding ventilator seems to come from a composite carriage built to diagram 130 which was built at York in 1938. Why build new when you can steal something ready made? See photos. The carriage has 16 doors all of which take ages to either renovate 12 doors or make four new doors to complete it.”

The Birkhill signal box has progressed in recent months, back in June ‘26 scaffolding could still be seen while the roof was being finished, our permanent way team photographed it today after the scaffolding was removed, giving us a better idea how it will look.

🚗 CALLING ALL CLASSIC & VINTAGE VEHICLE OWNERS! 🚂

We’re getting ready for our Steam, Steel, Road & Rail Classic Car Rally at Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway on Sunday 11th October – and we’d love you to be part of it!

We’re looking for a fantastic variety of vehicles to join us, including:

🚘 Classic & vintage cars
🏍️ Motorcycles
🚐 Vans
🚜 Tractors & traction engines
🪖 Military vehicles

…and plenty more! If it’s interesting, unusual or has a story to tell, we want to see it!

📍 Bo’ness Station Car Park, in front of Hamilton’s Cottage

There is space for a maximum of 100 vehicles, so places will be limited.

🎟️ Exhibitor bonus: Bring your vehicle along and you’ll receive 2 complimentary tickets – for the driver and one passenger – giving you access to the event, Museum of Scottish Railways and model railway, plus one return trip on the train.

Vehicles will be displayed on hard-standing throughout the event.

Returning to Bo’ness at 17:02.

This will be the first chance to run behind 37025 at Bo’ness since overhauled as seen on Quest TV “We Saved a Train” with Francis Bourgeois and Chris Harris.
Tickets including a Day Rover option will go on sale shortly.

Museum of Scottish Railways will be open longer on 16th August from 10:00 to 17:00 and Bo'ness Gauge O Group O gauge model railway will also be open.

Afternoon teas available this Sunday (2nd August)!
Soak up the atmosphere of our award-winning heritage railway through the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear. Included is an afternoon tea of freshly made sandwiches, cakes and scones with tea or coffee.
Vegetarian and Gluten Free are available, please let us know if you require this at time of booking. Unfortunately we cannot provide a Vegan option at this time.
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The afternoon tea is served at your seat in a shared carriage. You will not be asked to share a table with anyone out with your party.
Gift Vouchers are available now at a cost of £40.00 per adult and £33.00 per child (5-15), which includes train travel.

🚂 Service Update – Heritage Diesel Services This Week 🚂

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone for your understanding and support following the train cancellations on Tuesday 21st July.

As the current hot and dry weather continues, all train services for the remainder of this week will operate with our heritage diesel locomotives. This decision has been made in line with the ongoing risk of lineside fires and helps us continue to operate safely while protecting our passengers, volunteers, staff and the surrounding countryside.

While we know many visitors look forward to experiencing our wonderful steam locomotives, we're delighted to still be able to offer journeys behind our historic heritage diesel fleet, each with its own important place in Scotland's railway story.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you on board this week. We can't wait to see our steam locomotives back in action as soon as conditions allow. ❤️🚂
