As dusk settles over Brampton, one of our town’s most fascinating residents takes to the skies.

Bats have been part of life here for centuries, and the landscapes around Brampton provide an ideal habitat. These remarkable mammals play a vital role in our local ecosystem, feeding on insects and helping to maintain a natural balance in the environment.

Despite their mysterious reputation, bats are neither blind nor aggressive. They navigate with extraordinary precision using echolocation, emitting high-frequency sounds and interpreting the returning echoes to build a detailed picture of their surroundings.

The combination of historic buildings, mature trees, river corridors and surrounding farmland makes the Brampton area particularly attractive to bats. On warm summer evenings, they can often be seen darting and swooping overhead as they hunt.

As we celebrate the natural heritage that makes Brampton such a special place to live, work and visit, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate these remarkable creatures. They are an important part of our local environment and a reminder that even after sunset, our town remains full of life.

When you visit us here in Brampton on a warm summer evening, look up. Those swift silhouettes crossing the twilight sky are a reminder that some of the town’s most fascinating wildlife appears only after the sun goes down.

Not every visitor discovers Brampton from a hotel room or holiday cottage. Some arrive with a tent, a pair of walking boots and a desire to experience Cumbria at its most peaceful.

Surrounded by open countryside and within easy reach of some of the area's finest walking routes, Coombe Crag campsite has become a popular base for those looking to explore North Cumbria beyond the usual tourist trail. What makes Coombe Crag particularly special, however, is the attention given to the little details that make a stay memorable.

For walkers exploring the area, cyclists passing through, or visitors looking to discover a different side of Cumbria, Coombe Crag Camping provides more than just a place to pitch a tent. The campsite has developed thoughtful touches that reflect the character of the business and the people behind it. An honesty Snack Shed welcomes both campers and walkers, while its own dedicated bus stop, served by Reays Coaches, makes it possible to arrive and explore without relying entirely on the car.

It is businesses like this that help shape the visitor experience in and around Brampton. Not through grand attractions or large developments, but through hospitality, imagination and a clear understanding of what people value when they come to our part of Cumbria.

As more visitors seek authentic experiences and a slower pace of travel, places such as Coombe Crag Camping demonstrate exactly why Brampton continues to attract those looking to discover the countryside, the community and the independent businesses that make this area so distinctive.

No acting experience needed, no pressure, just good company and fascinating conversation.

The group meets monthly on the second Thursday from 7pm to 9pm and new members are always welcome. £2 includes refreshments.

Brampton Farm Shop is one of those rare places that awakens every sense the moment you walk through the door. The colours are extraordinary. Golden apricots, vibrant nectarines, fresh green herbs, jewel like fruit and vegetables arranged with such care that the whole shop feels alive with energy and warmth.

There is the scent of freshness in the air, the richness of herbs and ripe produce, shelves lined with jams, chutneys, teas and nourishing food chosen with real thought behind it. Every display invites you to slow down, look properly and reconnect with the pleasure of good food.

Owner Irina brings genuine passion and knowledge to the shop. Her love of fresh produce, nourishment and mindful living shines through in everything she does. Whether she is talking about the creamy sweetness of a custard apple, the citrus freshness of star fruit or encouraging people to buy thoughtfully and waste less, there is a sense that this is about far more than shopping. It is about appreciating food, flavour and quality in a more meaningful way.

Places like Brampton Farm Shop give our town its richness and character. Independent, vibrant and full of personality, it is a reminder that some of the best experiences can still be found in the simple pleasure of discovering beautiful food, lovingly chosen and shared with care.

Just a short journey from Brampton, Cumbria's Museum of Military Life offers a fascinating insight into the people and events that helped shape both Cumbria and Britain’s military history.

Located inside the historic Carlisle Castle, the museum tells the story of Cumbria’s county infantry regiments, including the Border Regiment, which was formed in 1881 following the amalgamation of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot and the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot, whose histories date back to the 18th century. From the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War through to more modern conflicts, the museum houses extensive collections of medals, uniforms, weapons, documents, and personal belongings that reveal the human stories behind military history.

One of the museum’s most striking features is its recreated First World War trench experience, offering visitors an impression of the conditions faced by soldiers on the Western Front. The museum also highlights Cumbria’s contribution to major military campaigns, with many soldiers coming from communities across the county, including Brampton and the surrounding villages.

The Border Regiment served in campaigns across the British Empire and during both World Wars, earning a strong reputation for service and resilience. Today, the regiment’s history remains closely connected to many families and communities throughout North Cumbria.

Whether your interest is military history, local heritage, or discovering the stories of ordinary Cumbrian people who lived through extraordinary times, the museum remains one of the region’s most significant heritage attractions.

Staying in Brampton places visitors within easy reach of attractions like this, while also offering the character and atmosphere of a traditional Cumbrian market town. With independent shops, local food and drink, surrounding countryside, and excellent access to North Cumbria’s historic attractions, Brampton provides an ideal base for exploring the wider region.

Did you know people around Brampton still use Viking-age words?

Over 1,000 years ago, Norse settlers arrived in Cumbria and left a lasting mark on the area around Brampton, not just in the landscape but in the language too. Many of the words still used locally to describe the countryside come directly from Old Norse, the language spoken by the Vikings.

Words like beck, fell, tarn, dale, thwaite, garth, gate, howe and keld have all survived here for centuries. They describe the streams, hills, valleys, clearings and pathways around Brampton, and while many disappeared elsewhere in England, they remained part of everyday speech in Cumbria.

That means when people in Brampton talk about a beck running through the fields, a fell on the skyline, or a walk around Talkin Tarn, they are still using words rooted in the language of the Norse settlers who lived here more than a thousand years ago.

Brampton is not just surrounded by history. Parts of its Viking past are still spoken every day.
