Moving in Bath? Insurance really matters, especially with period properties 🏛️📦

There are two types of cover worth checking before you book a removals company.

👉 Goods in transit covers your possessions, from the piano and paintings to the contents of every box.

👉 Public liability covers damage to the property itself, such as wallpaper, cornices, stonework, glass and those beautiful details you really don’t want anyone taking chances with.

A company can have one without the other, and even if they have both, the cover level needs to be right for the job. A modern semi and a Grade II listed townhouse aren’t quite the same thing.

Our advice? Ask to see the insurance certificates before you book. Any company worth booking should be happy to send them over.

At Move On, insurance is included as standard, not sold as an extra on the day. We carry up to £100,000 goods in transit cover per move at no extra charge, which can be increased for a minimal cost when needed, plus £5 million public liability cover.

A recent commercial move for Umberslade at CARGO Work, Wapping Wharf 🚛

We were clearing furniture from a first-floor suite and moving it to another of Umberslade’s offices in Warwickshire. The job involved two 3.5-tonne Lutons, carefully planned around the building managers so the other tenants could carry on without disruption.

The standout item? A solid wood boardroom table seating twelve, which definitely wasn’t fitting in the lift 😅

So the team pad-wrapped it, fitted webbing lifting straps, carefully walked it down the stairs, and strapped it safely into the van before anything else was loaded.

CARGO Work is a proper Bristol landmark, made from upcycled shipping containers stacked within the walls of the old city gaol. It’s an amazing, vibrant and seriously creative space to work in, developed by Umberslade, designed by Alec French Architects, built by Halsall, with the interior fit-out delivered by Interaction.

We’ve worked with Umberslade for years, and it’s always a pleasure to work with Founders Stuart and Esme. It’s also been brilliant to watch Wapping Wharf grow into the unique place it is today, turning from a patch of land many people wouldn’t have looked twice at into one of Bristol’s best places to visit, work, relax and take in the harbour atmosphere.

A lovely job, a brilliant space to work in, and a great effort from the team as always 👏

One question we get asked a lot: “Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture?” 🛠️
The short answer is yes. We do it on nearly every move, and it makes life a lot easier for our customers.

Beds, dining tables, wardrobes, sofas, large cabinets… some things simply move better when they’re taken apart first. It reduces the risk of damage, makes heavy or awkward items easier to handle, and can save a lot of space if items are heading into storage.

Because we do this day in, day out, we know what needs dismantling, what can stay in one piece, and how to get it back together properly at the other end.

This kitchen display cabinet was a great example. It was heavy, expensive, had glass doors, and needed protecting properly, so the team took it apart, wrapped each section carefully and made sure it was ready for safe storage.

During your survey, we’ll talk through what needs dismantling, what doesn’t, and what’s included, so there are no moving day surprises.

Some moves are all about the planning 💪

We recently moved this bespoke seven foot sideboard from a Georgian home in Clifton into secure storage with us in Keynsham. Made from solid sheet steel and weighing around 100kg, it wasn’t exactly your average piece of furniture.

It was tightly wedged into an alcove, had very few easy grip points, and needed moving through a home with beautiful hardwood flooring, natural stone, and bath stone masonry to protect along the way.

Luckily, this is exactly why we carry out in-person surveys. Our surveyor spotted the challenge before moving day, so the team arrived with the right plan, the right kit and everyone knowing exactly what needed to happen.

Blankets under the sharp edges, doors removed to reduce weight, webbing added for proper grip, piano trolley ready and four of the team working together to get it safely down the stairs and into the van.

Awkward? Definitely. Under control? Absolutely.

One of our main mantras at Move On, and something that underpins absolutely everything we do. It might sound simple, but it’s at the heart of how we plan, prepare and deliver every single move from start to finish, making sure nothing is left to chance and every customer gets a smooth, well organised experience.

1️⃣ Proper 📝 — we gather the right information from the start. Surveys, access checks, volume, timings and all the little details that can make a big difference on moving day.

2️⃣ Prior 🔍 — we look ahead and sequence every step, highlighting any problems, challenges and obstacles before they happen, and making sure we have a solution in place for moving day.

3️⃣ Planning 🗺️ — making sure we've got a detailed plan in place for moving day, based on the cubic volume, what's important to the customer, and the access at the collection and delivery addresses.

4️⃣ Prevents 🛡️ — good planning prevents problems, delays and damage, which saves time, stress and unnecessary cost.
