Malago is…Malagone! After 40 years of service, Bristol Port’s cutter suction dredger, Malago, has recently left the Port, marking the end of a chapter in our maritime history.

Built in 1985, Malago played a vital role in maintaining safe access to the Port’s docks, berths and navigational channels by removing silt deposited by the Severn Estuary.

Its articulated swinging cutter head broke up material from the dock bed, which was then pumped through one kilometre of floating pipeline and safely discharged into the estuary.

As Malago reached the end of its operational life with the Port, the decision was made to invest in a replacement. The state-of-the-art dredger, Trym, is efficient and offers greater operational resilience, while enabling the development of a more sustainable marine fleet.

Malago has now been sold and was moved to Swansea. We thank everyone who operated, maintained and worked alongside the vessel during its service.

After 36 incredible years of serving the Royal Portbury Dock community, Louise officially hung up her apron for the final time yesterday!

What began in a Portacabin run by Louise and Ange, grew into L&V Catering in a building that became far more than just a canteen. It became the heart of the dock, a place where colleagues, contractors and drivers came together over home cooked meals, cups of tea and plenty of laughter.

From hearty breakfasts and roast dinners to jam roly-poly, homemade soups and freshly baked flapjacks, everything was cooked from scratch. Whether feeding the workforce through busy shipping periods, supporting essential workers during the challenges of COVID-19, or simply providing a welcoming place for people to meet, chat and recharge, Louise and her team were always there.

Countless memories have been made including visits from famous faces such as Jamie Oliver, Princess Anne and Jeremy Hunt.

As Louise begins a well earned retirement, Victoria has embarked on a new chapter, returning to nursing in the Brain Injury Unit at Weston.

Thank you both for your remarkable dedication, resilience and commitment over the past 36 years. Your warmth, hard work and home cooked food have left a lasting mark on everyone at the Port.

Forget England vs Argentina, the real showdown took place this evening! ⚽

The annual Engineering vs Marine charity football match kicked off at Portishead Football Club, with plenty of competitive spirit and a great crowd.

Half-time: Engineering 2–1 Marine
Full-time: Engineering 3–6 Marine

Engineering went into the break with the lead, but in the second half the Marine team found another gear, battling through the heat to secure a 6–3 victory.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, supported and donated, a fantastic evening for a great cause.

We are looking for Marine Apprentices to join our Marine Department as part of a two-year apprenticeship, starting in August 2026.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on our fleet of commercial workboats and dredging vessels, while completing a nationally recognised Level 3 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Apprenticeship, alongside MCA, RYA and other industry qualifications.

During the apprenticeship, you will develop skills across a wide range of areas including vessel operations, dredging, marine maintenance, navigation, seamanship, bridge watchkeeping and more.

Starting salary: £19,639 per annum
Closing date: Tuesday 14 July 2026
Start date: August 2026

Hot off the press…we are proud to announce that we are winners of the Port Skills and Safety Best Skills Initiative Award!

Judging took place live at the event today, where members of our Safety and Training team, alongside three of our Port apprentices, Rion, James and Dan presented our Apprentice Development Programme to the judging panel.

The award recognises the Port’s long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of skilled, resilient and safety-focused port professionals. From being one of the first ports in the world to adopt a Port Operations Apprenticeship Scheme, to proudly showcasing our current Apprentice Development Programme almost 35 years later, apprenticeships remain at the heart of Bristol Port.

A fantastic few days at Multimodal 2026!

The Bristol Port Company was pleased to exhibit at the NEC Birmingham, showcasing Bristol’s Global Gateway and the wide range of trades, cargoes and services we handle across the Port.

A highlight was our Environment and Sustainability takeover on Wednesday afternoon, where our team shared some of the brilliant work taking place across the Port, from supporting wildlife and creating habitats to reducing carbon and working towards net zero.

On the final day, our placement students joined the stand to speak with visiting students about careers in the port sector, their own experiences and what it’s like to be women working in ports.

For those who have been following the much-loved Bristol Port socks, our new colourway made its debut at Multimodal!

A big thank you to everyone who came to see us, and to our home team who helped represent the Port so proudly throughout the event.

Our Engineering apprentices came together yesterday for their annual day out at Aerospace Bristol home of Concorde, a fitting location to celebrate engineering talent, ambition and achievement.

The group included apprentices from 1st to 5th year, working across Mechanical, Electrical, Motorshop and Civil Engineering.

The group took part in a Educational workshop as well as having the opportunity to look around the museum. CEO David Brown also presented a special recognition to James Dorrell, who was recently named North Somerset Apprentice of the Year at the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards 2026, as well as our 2026 Apprentice of the Year, Zak Durbin and runner-up Evie Jones.

David also paid tribute to the Engineering and Training teams for the leadership, commitment and support they give to our apprentices, helping them develop their skills and confidence while living our values of Agility, Integrity and Excellence.

Congratulations to all our apprentices, an impressive group with a very bright future ahead!

Hello from Rotterdam 👋

Some of our Commercial team are at Breakbulk Europe 2026 this week, representing Bristol Port at one of the world’s biggest events for specialist cargo.

The event brings together people from across the global shipping, logistics and project cargo industries, all focused on moving cargo that is too large, heavy or complex to travel in standard containers.

For us, it is a great opportunity to talk about the important role Bristol Port plays in supporting trade, jobs and major projects here in the South West.

A proud moment for the team and a great chance to showcase Bristol Port on an international stage.

Today, Bristol Port was delighted to host its first ever Family Open Day!

Despite the rainy weather, colleagues and their loved ones enjoyed a fantastic day exploring the Port through guided tours, trying out our crane simulator, viewing our mobile plant display and experiencing the excitement of the Port police “blues and twos”.

There was plenty of family entertainment on offer, including a wipeout challenge, bouncy castle, face painting, live music, a magician and delicious food from our canteen, alongside a popular hog roast.

The event was a great success and showcased the strong sense of community and camaraderie that makes Bristol Port such a special place to work. It was wonderful to welcome families and friends and give them the opportunity to see first-hand the unique environment in which we work every day.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day such a memorable occasion.
