๐Ÿ”ง WORKSHOP INSIGHT THURSDAY | Who Should Be Carrying Out Your MOT QC Checks?

Are the right people carrying out quality control checks at your MOT centre?

QC checks aren't just about ticking a box for DVSA compliance. They're an important part of maintaining testing standards, identifying issues and making sure your MOT operation is running as it should.

But who should actually be carrying them out? And what should MOT centre owners and managers be considering?

In our latest blog, we look at the responsibilities around MOT quality control and why getting the right people involved matters.

At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, we support MOT centres with QC checks, site reviews and practical guidance to help maintain standards and stay compliant.

๐Ÿ”ง TECH TIP TUESDAY | EV Fault-Finding: Don't Just Replace Parts!

When diagnosing faults in electric and hybrid vehicles, getting to the root of the problem is essential.

โšก This week's tip: Don't rely on fault codes alone. Understanding how high-voltage systems work, interpreting manufacturer data and carrying out the correct diagnostic tests are key to identifying faults accurately.

For experienced technicians, advanced EV diagnostics require more than just knowing how to work safely on high-voltage systems.

At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, our Level 4 Award in Diagnosis, Testing & Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles & Components helps experienced technicians develop the advanced skills needed to diagnose complex faults and repair high-voltage components.

๐Ÿ“š Already hold a Level 3 EV qualification and have significant high-voltage experience? This could be your next step.

๐Ÿ“ฐ IN THE NEWS | New MOT Rules for LED Headlights

MOT testers โ€“ are you up to speed with the latest changes?

From 14 October 2026, the DVSA has updated its MOT inspection requirements to allow certain approved LED replacement bulbs in existing halogen headlamp units.

The changes apply to Class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles, but there are important conditions.
๐Ÿ”ง The replacement bulbs must have the correct approval.
๐Ÿ”ง The headlamp unit must be compatible.
๐Ÿ”ง The required approval sticker must be present and meet the DVSA's requirements.

For MOT testers and garage owners, it's another reminder of why keeping up with DVSA updates matters.

At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, we help MOT professionals stay informed, maintain standards and meet their compliance responsibilities through specialist training and support.

๐Ÿ“– Read the official DVSA update here:

From 14 October 2026, approved LED replacement (LEDr) bulbs fitted in halogen headlamps will be allowed in class 3, 4, 5 and 7 MOT tests.

๐Ÿ”ง WORKSHOP INSIGHT | Are Your QC Checks Actually Picking Up Problems?

Quality control checks shouldn't just be another box to tick.

For MOT testing stations, regular QC checks are an important part of maintaining standards, identifying potential issues and making sure testing procedures are being followed correctly.
๐Ÿ’ก But here's the question: Are you using the results to improve your workshop?
A good QC process should help you:
โœ… Identify inconsistencies in testing procedures
โœ… Spot areas where testers may need additional support
โœ… Maintain standards across your MOT testing team
โœ… Address potential issues before they become bigger problems

At Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, we support MOT testing stations with QC checks, site reviews and specialist training to help garages maintain standards and stay on top of their DVSA responsibilities.

Good quality control isn't just about finding mistakes. It's about preventing them.

๐Ÿ”ง TECH TIP TUESDAY | Heavy Electric & Hybrid Vehicles โ€“ Are Your Technicians Ready? โšก

Working on high-voltage systems requires more than traditional mechanical skills.
When repairing electric and hybrid buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles, technicians need the right knowledge and training to work safely.

๐Ÿ’ก This week's tech tip: Never assume a high-voltage system is safe to work on simply because the vehicle is switched off. Always follow the correct isolation and safety procedures before starting work.

At Pro-Tech, our Level 3 Technical Specialist in Heavy Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair & Replacement (Award) helps technicians develop the skills to safely repair and replace high-voltage components, including battery packs and powertrain systems.

๐Ÿ“š Our two-day course combines practical skills with technical knowledge to help technicians work confidently and safely on heavy electric and hybrid vehicles.

๐Ÿ“ฐ IN THE NEWS | Could independent garages face restrictions on vehicle data?

Access to vehicle information is becoming increasingly important as cars become more reliant on software, electronics and security systems.

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has raised concerns that proposed changes to UK vehicle regulations could leave independent garages facing greater restrictions on accessing security-related repair information.

๐Ÿ”ง What does this mean for your workshop?

Even with the right equipment and qualified technicians, garages could find themselves unable to complete certain repairs without access to manufacturer-controlled systems.

At Pro-Tech, we know how important it is for independent garages to keep pace with changing vehicle technology. Having the right skills, equipment and access to technical information is essential to keeping work in-house.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Are you already experiencing difficulties accessing vehicle data or carrying out certain repairs?
