UK Road Safety Statistics 2025: A Mixed Picture
The latest Department for Transport figures reveal some encouraging news, but also some areas of concern.
📉- Road fatalities overall fell by 3% in 2025, with an estimated 1,556 people losing their lives on UK roads compared to 2024.
However…
📈- People killed or seriously injured (KSIs) increased by 4% to 29,910, suggesting that while fewer collisions are proving fatal, more are resulting in life-changing injuries.
🏍️🏍️- Motorcycle fatalities rose by 13% to 384 deaths – the second consecutive annual increase. While it’s too early to say whether this is a long-term trend, the figures highlight the continued vulnerability of riders on our roads.
Positive reductions were seen among:
• Pedestrians: down 9% to 372 fatalities 🚶♂️
• Car occupants: down 8% to 638 fatalities 🚘
• Cyclists: down 1% to 81 fatalities 🚴
🚲🚴🚴- However , despite cyclist fatalities falling slightly, total pedal cycle casualties increased by 10% to 16,027 – the largest percentage rise of any road user group. This suggests more cyclists are being injured, even if fewer are being killed.
Overall casualties of all severities remained largely unchanged at 127,870.
The key message? While fewer people are dying on our roads, serious injuries are rising, and vulnerable road users – particularly motorcyclists and cyclists – continue to face significant risks.
