A slightly different start to the day this morning! 🎙️

I was invited onto BBC Radio Derby to talk about the continuing rise in fuel prices and what that means for businesses like ours at Derby Express Couriers.

As a transport business, fuel is obviously one of our biggest costs, so when diesel prices rise, we feel the impact very quickly. We keep a very close eye on our costs and continually adjust where we need to, but there’s a much bigger picture here than just our own business.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have a strong and loyal customer base, but we’re also very aware that those customers are facing rising costs from every direction too. Consumers are spending less, particularly on the parcel side, and that filters all the way through the supply chain.

We’re a family business, and more than 70 people from across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire work alongside us and our family. They’re feeling these increases personally too every time they fill their cars, pay their energy bills or do the weekly shop.

So while I wouldn’t say we’re worried about the future of Derby Express Couriers, we absolutely are conscious of the pressure on the wider local business community.

Our responsibility is to keep DEC strong and thriving, protect the jobs of the people who work with us, continue supporting our customers wherever we can, and keep adapting to whatever gets thrown at us.

It was great to have the opportunity to talk about the reality behind the headlines this morning.
