Something big is happening at Huddersfield Station

From major roof works and new platform construction to subway development and embankment stabilisation, the scale of the TransPennine Route Upgrade is becoming much clearer.

But what’s actually going on behind all that scaffolding?

This latest update takes a closer look at the details — the kind you don’t always notice at first glance — and shows how the station is really starting to take shape.

A major milestone at Huddersfield Station

The new footbridge deck has now been lifted into place during the latest weekend blockade — another big step in the TransPennine Route Upgrade.

This comes just days after the new bridge span was installed, and with more closures planned throughout April, the station is changing quickly.

There’s also ongoing work across the site, including platform construction, viaduct works and new foundations starting to appear.

So much has changed last weekend across the TransPennine Route Upgrade 👀

From bridge replacements and road closures to new structures now fully in place, work is moving quickly across multiple sites — including Huddersfield, Deighton, Ravensthorpe and Micklefield.

One of the biggest milestones… the new span at Huddersfield is now fully supported by its abutments, marking a major step forward in the station transformation.

There’s also new signalling infrastructure going in, piling works underway, and major groundwork happening right across the route.

Manchester Piccadilly has just reopened following Sunday morning engineering works.

In this video, I take a look at the station on its final day of closure, where only a handful of platforms are in use while the rest of the network comes back online. There’s also a close-up look at a tamper train in action and trains waiting out at Ardwick for platforms to reopen.

I’ve also included a visit to Golborne, where a station closed since 1967 is set to return to the network in 2027 — 60 years later.

If you’re interested in what actually happens during these blockades (and what changes afterwards), this is worth a watch 👇

Did you know Siemens Ardwick Depot turns 20 this year?

Opened in April 2006, Ardwick was built specifically to maintain the Class 185 Desiro fleet for Trans Pennine Express. It was part of a £260 million contract that also included a secondary depot in York. The main shed covers 6,000m2 and can hold eight trains Simultaneously, with a wheel lathe, bogie drops, and engine drop facilities on site.

In 2013, the depot was extended and electrified to also accommodate Class 350/4 electric units, keeping pace with the expanding TPE franchise.

But the real story is reliability. The Class 185 fleet maintained here has won multiple Golden Spanner Awards from Modern Railways magazine, the industry gold standard for rolling stock performance. This includes seven consecutive wins in its category, with Gold awarded again as recently as November 2025.

As the Transpennine Route Upgrade transforms the route these trains have served for 20 years, Ardwick's record stands as a benchmark for what dedicated, skilled maintenance can achieve.

Happy 20th, Ardwick.

Manchester Piccadilly is nearing the end of its 9-day rail blockade.

During the possession, 11 sets of points have been renewed along with significant track upgrades at one of the UK’s busiest stations.

This video captures the final day of engineering works, including aerial views over Ardwick Viaduct, on-track teams using a Wacker compactor, and a Kirow rail crane lifting and positioning track components.
