Yesterday at The Preparing our border for the future partnership meeting attended by Harbour Shipping, The Chancellor of The Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove announced “the current transition period will end on the 31st December 2020”. He went onto say “Customs procedures at the border will follow, we must be ready”. This will result in Customs declarations for all inbound and outbound cargo, EU consignments will be treated the same as Rest of The World consignments, symmetry will be the key. Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary Certificates will be required for certain food products, goods of animal origin, live animals as well as certain plants and plant products. Carriers will also be required to submit safety and security declarations to both UK and European Customs authorities.

All of the previously advised Transitional Policy Easements will not be implemented , this means there will be No Transitional Simplified Procedures for import cargo and import taxes will have to be paid at the time of crossing the frontier unless the importer is authorised to enter goods into another Customs regime.

This news will come as quite a shock to the transport and logistics industry along with the UK’s Customs agents who must attempt to increase their staffing to meet the unprecedented demand that will now follow.

On your behalf we are seeking clarification on various points and trying to obtain clear written guidance on how the borders in the UK and Ireland will work from the 1st January 2021. As soon as we have more information we will notify you accordingly.
