Tomorrow at 11am, a Merchant Navy Day Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place at the Merchant Navy War Memorial on Marine Parade, Dover Waterfront.

Merchant Navy Day is marked nationally each year to honour the people of the Merchant Navy, including those who lost their lives in times of war, and to recognise the vital contribution merchant seafarers continue to make to our communities, our economy and our way of life.

Port of Dover CEO Doug Bannister will lay a wreath in remembrance of those who served and sacrificed. The Port will also be represented at the service by Small Vessel Engineering Apprentice Edward Blackman and Chief Engineer Chris Webb, alongside members of our tug crews.

Their attendance reflects the strong and continuing connection between Dover, today’s working seafarers and the generations of merchant mariners who came before them.

We are proud to stand alongside the wider Dover and maritime community in marking Merchant Navy Day and remembering all those who have served under the Red Ensign.

🏖️ Today is World Beach Day, an international celebration of the important role beaches play as places of joy and recreation, cultural landmarks and essential local ecosystems.

Here in Dover we have two shingle beaches, Dover Beach, in the heart of the Port and Shakespeare Beach, so called because of it's appearance in William Shakespeare's King Lear.

They are both vegetated shingle beaches, a rare globally threatened coastal habitat, full of hardy plant species that support local pollinators and ground nesting birds.

Come along and help to preserve these precious ecosystems by taking part in the Marine Conservation Society's Great British Beach Clean on the 20th September.

🌟⛵Congratulations to 15 year old Faith Turner who sailed the channel crossing in 2 Hours and 56 Minutes!

A little over a week ago, we posted about a young girl who was going to attempt to sail the channel crossing from Dover to France in a topper dinghy to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

We are very proud to announce that she did it in 2:56 and raised a total of £5510 !

🎤When asked how the day went, she had this to say: "On Friday I sailed across the English Channel in a Topper dinghy in the busy shipping lane between Dover and Cap-Gris to raise money for Cancer Research.

I faced many challenges along the way such as having to avoid ferries, war ships and cargo ships which was difficult in the giant waves. I have never sailed with such big waves and once I got the hang of surfing them, they were no longer as big and scary and more fun as I was going average 8-9 knots. In order to get the world record, I had to get out of my boat and touch the French land which was very difficult because the waves were crashing onto me and rock were either side of me so it was extremely difficult to get back in the boat and get sailing again but I barely managed to do that without drifting onto the rocks. I would like to thank all my sponsors; XB44, Saxon Air, Rooster, Performance Sailcraft Europe, GP Watercraft.

The Port of Dover were super lovely and made everything happen on the day, even when it looked like we couldn’t launch the safety boats they managed to arrange to lift them in with their huge boat cranes! I would also like to thank everyone who donated money towards this and to thank my coach, Tim Hulse for supporting me on the water and believing in me. Overall it took me 2 hours 56 minutes to cross the English Channel making me the fastest solo dinghy sailor to cross the channel ever.”

🌟⛵ Under 24 hours to go until 15 year old Faith Turner sails the channel crossing for charity!

On Friday the 21st of August, 15 year old Faith Turner will be braving the channel crossing in a Topper Dinghy from Dover raising money for Cancer Research UK

Faith is a passionate young sailor who has grown up on the water. She has competed in Topper regattas across the UK and developed a deep love for dinghy sailing.

This Channel crossing in a Topper, one of sailing's most iconic single-handed dinghies, is both a personal challenge and a fundraising mission close to her heart. Faith is raising money for Cancer Research UK, and every pound donated goes directly to life-saving cancer research.

The English Channel is no small feat in a Topper. Faith will face shipping lanes, tidal streams, and open-water conditions that push any sailor to their limits. But she's ready.
