⚓ 🛳️ Holland America Line donates £5,000 to Dover sailing club to support next generation of sailors!

Holland America Line has donated £5,000 to Cinque Ports Sailing Club in Dover to help fund four new Fusion Dinghies, helping to create more opportunities for young people to develop their skills and confidence on the water.

The donation was presented during a special ceremony on board Nieuw Statendam while the ship was in port on Friday, 16 October. Representatives from Holland America Line, Cinque Ports Sailing Club, the Port of Dover and local school students, attended the event.

🌟 Last week, Port of Dover colleagues spent a day volunteering at Shepherdswell Primary School.

The team supported the school by building an eco-toilet and breathing new life into a sensory path that had seen better days. Their incredible efforts gave pupils at the school an enhanced outdoor learning space, creating valuable opportunities for children to explore, learn and play in an engaging and accessible space.

One colleague said, “It's refreshing to work for a company that wants to make a positive difference in the community and gives its staff the time and support to get involved”

Headteacher Mark Lamb added, “The sensory path has been out of action for a few months because of the maintenance that needed to take place with it. The volunteers coming in did a fantastic job bringing it back to life.

The path gets used regularly by all the children at the school and is an excellent selling point for children looking to join the school. We have been waiting a while to finish our toilet. This will mean that the younger children using forest school will not need to be taken back by an adult to the main school. Forest school sessions will become more efficient and purposeful for the children for the whole time.

As a school we have limited budget to pay for works to be carried out, having volunteers coming in is a huge help and benefits so many children, thank you so much”.

Today is national cuttlefish day!

Cuttlefish are cephalopods, close relatives of octopus and squid. The word Cephalopod is derived from the Greek word ‘kephalopodes’ which literally means “head-feet”. We have 3 species of cuttlefish native to UK waters Common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), Elegant cuttlefish (Sepia elegans), Pink cuttlefish (Sepia orbignyana). They are predatory creatures feeding on crabs, fish and smaller cuttlefish.

They are highly intelligent! They can recall previous events, which helps them learn from previous experiences to improve their hunting behaviour. They also possess the ability to change colour and texture to match their environment, which can be used to avoid predators or attract mates. Cuttlefish possess 3 hearts: one for the whole body, and the other two for each set of gills.

Cuttlefish have what's known as a cuttlebone, a chalky internal shell that helps to control their buoyancy with chambers that fill with gas and/or water. These wash up on beaches all around the UK very frequently, including Dover.

🏖️A HUGE shoutout and a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who came along to our beach clean at Shakespeare Beach!

We collected a grand total of 42.8kg of rubbish spread across 22 bags. Rubbish collected included cushion seats, glass, metal, keyboard keys and fishing rods.

A big thank you to the 38 people who attended to help keep our beaches clean 💙

It will remain open for pedestrian access, with diversions in place for vehicles.

🌟 This Summer, the Port of Dover colleagues got together for a volunteering day at St Mary's C of E Primary School, Dover in Dover.

The team transformed two overgrown areas within the school grounds, dedicating their time and effort to clear dense vegetation, remove weeds, and tidy the spaces. Their hard work helped reclaim previously unused areas, creating safer, more attractive environments for pupils and staff.

Charlotte from St Mary’s Primary School who was leading on the project said....

“The team helped to clear overgrown trees and shrubs from two areas within the school grounds. These areas were difficult to access, and they were all willing to tackle the challenging project with energy, ideas and insight.

These two areas are now accessible, and we can move forward with further re-design and improvements of our outdoor sensory garden, gardening club and reflection spaces, so we are now in a good position to expand this school project.

We are so thankful for everyone’s efforts and energy. The changes to the school grounds are amazing”!

🏖️ Under 2 weeks until The British Marine Shakespeare Beach Clean 2026!

Here in Dover we have two shingle beaches, Dover Beach, in the heart of the Port and Shakespeare Beach, so called because of it's appearance in William Shakespeare's King Lear.

They are both vegetated shingle beaches, a rare globally threatened coastal habitat, full of hardy plant species that support local pollinators and ground nesting birds.

Come along and help to preserve these precious ecosystems by taking part in the Marine Conservation Society's Great British Beach Clean on the 20th September.
