A busy night for our volunteer crews, with two separate callouts in the early hours of this morning.

🕑 Saturday 8th August – 00:45am
📟 109 – D-Class Inshore Lifeboat

Solent Coastguard requested the launch of our ILB to locate and assist a person reported to be in the water on the eastern side of the harbour entrance.

Our volunteer crew launched and immediately began a search alongside Eastbourne and Birling Gap Coastguard Rescue Teams and police officers.

As the search continued, information was received that the person had been located away from the search area and was safe. The search was stood down.

But as the ILB entered the locks, the very familiar sound of the pagers was heard once more.

📟 110 – Trent Class All-Weather Lifeboat

Solent Coastguard requested the assistance of our Trent Class lifeboat to a 29-foot sailing vessel experiencing mechanical problems.

With no wind and the vessel unable to safely make the harbour entrance under its own power, our crew located the casualty vessel drifting approximately four miles east of Eastbourne.

Following a risk assessment on scene, the Coxswain determined that the safest option was to take the vessel under tow and bring it into the nearest safe haven – Sovereign Harbour.

Crew Member Nick was transferred onto the sailing vessel to assist with making off the tow and conducted a welfare check with those onboard.

After a short tow, the sailing vessel was safely brought into the harbour just after 4am, where it was handed into the care of marina staff.

A good time was had by one and all at our summer BBQ on Saturday. A perfect opportunity to catch up with friends old and new. We even had some very well dressed fenders attend.
Thanks to Adam, Alex and Charlie from Premier for transporting the BBQ and gazebo.

🚨 RNLI Eastbourne crews respond to three call-outs in just over 24 hours

RNLI Eastbourne lifeboat crews have been busy responding to a series of incidents along the Sussex coast.

On Monday 27 July, the D-Class inshore lifeboat was tasked to assist with a multi-agency search for a missing person to the west of Eastbourne. Thankfully, the person was located by other emergency services before the lifeboat launched and the crew were stood down.

Later the same day, crews were called to reports of two girls in difficulty on a paddleboard near Eastbourne Pier. Beach lifeguards were able to safely recover both casualties before the lifeboat launched.

On Tuesday 28 July, the Trent Class all-weather lifeboat was launched following reports of a possible vessel in distress around 19 nautical miles south of Eastbourne.

The crew travelled for around an hour to reach the reported location in busy shipping lanes, remaining on scene for more than an hour alongside other vessels that had responded. It was later confirmed no assistance was required and the lifeboat returned safely to station at around 5pm.

RNLI Eastbourne reminded the public that in a coastal emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

🎉 Happy 55th Birthday to our volunteer crew member, Dave Needham! 🎉

Dave joined Eastbourne RNLI at just 16 years old and has dedicated nearly 40 years to saving lives at sea. Since records began in 1999, he has been involved in almost 1000 service launches, helped 882 people, and played a direct part in saving 48 lives!

Although he has reached the age limit to continue his role as a Helmsman on the D-Class, he'll continue to serve alongside his Son and Brother- Ryan and Peter, as one of our All-Weather Lifeboat Coxswains, leading the crew on service.

Away from Eastbourne, Dave is also a full-time Coastal Lifeboat Trainer for the RNLI, travelling around the UK to train volunteer lifeboat crews and helping ensure they have the skills needed to save lives at sea. His family - Tracy, Jade and Ryan, continue to be incredibly proud of his hard work and dedication to the RNLI.

Everyone at Eastbourne RNLI would like to thank Dave for his decades of dedication and wishes him a very Happy 55th Birthday! 🎂
