Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh

Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. The gardens were formed after a Loch (Lake) was drained that surrounded the Castle Rock to the north. The Nor Loch stretched from under the North Bridge where the Waverley Station is now to the west end of Princes Street in front of St Cuthbert's Church. After draining the Nor Loch which began in 1759 and was completed by circa 1810 a large earthen mound was created as a short cut between the new town and the High street in the old town. This created two areas which were later cultivated into to garden areas the east and west gardens.Circa 1840 the railway was built in the valley and Waverley Station opened in its present form in 1854.

Built on the site of Mary of Guise Palace. Demolished by University of Edinburgh who built the New College in 1846. The new college, Assembly Hall was built in 1846 as a Theological College, and a home for the Church of Scotland in 1929. The General Assembly is held here annually in May. This is also where in 1989 the majority of the Scottish members of parliament signed a document to claim the right for Scotland to have an independent parliament. The Assembly hall was used as a debating hall of the Scottish Parliament for 5 years between 1999 -2004. Se www.allaboutedinburgh.co.uk has information on most old buildings.

EDINBURGH TAXI OUTING CANCELLE

The Police should hold their heads in Shame.
This Should be brought up in Parliament.
They have a riding of the marches and many other things for tourists but can't do anything for children of Edinburgh that get this one day a year.

🖤 Please share this far and wide as well as emailing all of those mentioned.
This amazing historic day can't be allowed not to happen. It brings so much joy, love, fun and happiness to so many deserving children 🖤

We have just had a planning meeting with the City of Edinburgh Council and Police Scotland and we were informed of a new policy from the National Police Chief's Council which states that events such as ours can no longer be supported by the Police motorcyclists. Police Scotland have offered static traffic control along Princes Street, the Royal Mile and then through Holyrood Park to Meadowbank, but the rest of the journey would need to be conducted in general traffic obeying all of the traffic lights and junctions along the route. This could mean that, due to the congestion within the city, it could take several hours for the whole convoy to complete the entire route.

Given that all of the children taking part in the Outing all have some form of additional needs, I not prepared to subject them to the uncertainty of the journey, potentially having to sit for 20-30 minutes waiting on the rest of the convoy catching up.

The comfort and safety of the families taking part is the ONLY priority and therefore the Committee has decided that we have no choice but to cancel at least this year's Outing but, if the policy remains the same, then there will be no more Outing, which is a very sorry state of affairs given that we have been undertaking the Outing since 1947.

The following are the MPs and MSPs who cover the area of the Outing. Their constituents will be directly affected by this policy as will the thousands who line the route and join in with this amazing event. If you feel the urge, please contact them and ask if they can secure an exemption from the National Police Chief's Council's policy for our Outing, otherwise there will never be another Edinburgh Taxi Outing.
