Hiring a car in Scotland? There are a few things worth knowing first!

For visitors from the USA and Canada, driving in Scotland can be a fantastic way to explore, but it can also be a bit different from what you’re used to.

We drive on the **left**, roundabouts work differently, Highland roads can be narrow and winding, and that hire car that looks perfect online might not leave much room for four people and four large suitcases!

A few things to think about before booking:

Do you really need a car for your whole trip?
Should you book an automatic?
What size car will actually fit your passengers and luggage? What about insurance, excesses and deposits?
Are you prepared for single-track roads and passing places?
And should you really drive straight from the airport after a long flight?

Another hard day at the office…🥃

Today’s “work” has taken me to Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay.

The scenery’s not too bad, the weather’s doing its usual Islay thing… and apparently there’s whisky involved too.

It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it! 😂🥃

A new tour from Neil…

Scotland You Might Not Know
We recently visited somewhere a little different while out on tour near Loch Ness, Corrimony Chambered Cairn.

Tucked away in Glen Urquhart, this remarkable prehistoric monument is around 4,000 years old.

The cairn was built as a burial monument, with a narrow passage leading into the central chamber. Around it stand 11 stones, creating a fascinating reminder of the people who lived in this part of Scotland thousands of years ago.

It’s easy to drive through the Highlands admiring the scenery and miss places like this, but sometimes the lesser-known sites have the most incredible stories.

And the best part? It’s only a short distance from the much better-known Loch Ness.

Definitely one to add to the list if you're exploring this part of the Highlands.

A little piece of Scotland’s waterways
The Caledonian Canal runs for around 60 miles through the Highlands, linking Scotland’s east and west coasts.

This is Fort Augustus, where boats make their way through the famous locks before continuing their journey along the canal and towards Loch Ness.

With the mountains in the background, it’s a pretty spectacular place to stop and watch the boats go by.

Another side of Scotland that’s well worth seeing. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
