Progressing from treasure baskets (baskets filled with a selection of interesting, everyday or natural objects), once mobile babies can then explore the larger heuristic play room. Objects allow babies to sort, post, roll, shake, pile, hide, transport, rotate- developing a child's individual pattern of play or schema. Unlike modern toys, they have an infinite number of possible ways to be played w
ith. There is no right way to play with an egg cup. S there is no way to fail, only new ways to explore- each experiment raising more questions for the baby and giving them more ideas for play. Heuristic play is therefore great for building concentration. A baby will often sit for up to and over an hour with a good treasure basket. The role of the adult is as the observer. While we might otherwise approach play as the co-explorer or guide, in heuristic play, we simply watch. We do have to watch carefully, as soon of the "toys" pose potential risks, however, under supervision, heuristic play is a safe, and enjoyable activity for you both. The session runs for up to an hour. Please wait outside in the lobby, until invited to come in. Please bear in mind that adults are invited to sit around the edge of the play space, but encouraged not to pass objects to their baby or guide their child's play. Please also maintain a calm and quiet space- we'd love you to make friends and meet new people, but thank you for speaking quietly. Spaces are limited to maintain a calm space. Spaces are available for sitting (with support or without) babies until mobile in treasure baskets. Spaces are available for mobile babies, until they lose interest (either running around the room, or begin to "let's pretend" with objects). Please send me a message if you would like to come along.
