Some photos of a recent tour, heading away from the usual tourist routes.

Visiting the crofting townships of Tarksavaig and Ord; known as the “Garden of Skye” due to its relative greenness on the Sleat peninsula.

Also visiting the atmospheric ruins of Dunscaith castle. Neist point lighthouse, the most Westerly point on the Isle of Skye. Finally, the enchanting river Sligachan, flowing at the foot of the imposing Black Cuillin Mountains.

Some highlights, from the past few weeks, exploring the Isle of Skye, Oban, Argyll and Glencoe.

I can’t take all the photo credit, had the pleasure of touring with a young photographer who got some cracking shots!

Tucked among ancient trees and rushing Highland waters, the Invermoriston Summer House looks out over the River Moriston and its old stone bridge. Built for quiet reflection, it now watches centuries pass by in the sound of waterfalls and wind. 🌊🌲

Eilean Donan Castle — where Highland mist meets medieval legend. Once a stronghold of Clan Mackenzie and guarded by the fierce MacRaes, it now stands watch over the lochs like a ghost from another age. 🌫🏰

📍The wee White House

It began life as a crofting home in the highlands of Scotland. People shared farming among a small community, where land was shared to grow vegetables and raise animals. Any produce and profits earned from the farming would then be distributed among the community.

Since 1946, the hut has been maintained by the Scottish Mountaineering Club and owned by the National Trust of Scotland.
Today, it is rented out to travellers to stay in throughout the year. Inside, the hut remains largely traditional and even has the local Ballachulish slate roofing. The walls are thick and built with stone to withstand the strong winds in the area.
It's easy to find too!

Being the only building in the vicinity amongst such a rugged and expansive landscape is part of its breathtaking appeal. Even though the hut looks as if it's standing in the middle of nowhere, in fact, it's right beside the main road, the A82, that passes right through Glencoe.

📍Duntulm Castle

Perched on a cliff near Skye’s most northerly point, Duntulm Castle has a fascinating reputation. Not just as a formidable fortress with a very long history, but as a home to more than its fair share of ghosts.

A little haunting for you…. a nursemaid accidentally dropped the baby son of the clan chief from a castle window above the cliffs. The ghost of the nursemaid, killed in retribution, is still said to wander the ruins. She is apparently kept company by the ghost of Hugh MacDonald, who plotted against the rightful clan chief in the 1600s, and who was starved to death in the dungeon at Duntulm.
