Port of London Authority

Port of London Authority We look after the tidal Thames, the UK’s biggest port. Social media not monitored 24/7. At the PLA we oversee operations on the tidal Thames.

The 95 miles of river is home to: the UK's second biggest port; busiest inland waterway for passengers and freight; a valued marine environment; and a centre for sports and leisure activities.

This year’s Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race! 🚣🏅

A fantastic afternoon on the river, supporting one of the worlds oldest sporting events since 1715.

Congratulations to Callum Howard, this year’s winner! And a huge well done to the runners up, Jack Finelli and Charlie Milward.

A massive thanks to everyone who ensured a safe running of the event.

Meet Old Father Thames 🔱

Keeping watch over Trinity Square for more than a century, this larger-than-life figure sits high above the former headquarters of the PLA.

Old Father Thames is the traditional personification of the river: an elderly, bearded river god who has appeared in art and literature for centuries. Here, he holds his trident and points east, downriver towards the Thames Estuary.

A carved Old Father Thames once served as the figurehead of HMS Thames, launched in 1823, and surviving today in the collection at Royal Museums Greenwich.

He is not the building’s only nod to the river! Trinity Square is rich in maritime symbolism, with figures representing navigation, commerce, produce and exportation woven into its architecture.

The PLA may have long since left 10 Trinity Square, but traces of its history remain throughout the building and its surroundings.
