✈️ Travelling to Europe? Important Update on the New EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
The EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully in place across European borders. Most travellers are moving through smoothly, but some airports are seeing longer queues especially at peak times so here’s what you need to know.
I’ve personally been through the new system three times since it launched, and while it’s simple enough, the first registration can take a little longer.
What is EES?
EES replaces passport stamping with a secure digital record of your entry and exit. On your first trip, you’ll register:
• A facial image
• Fingerprints
(Children under 12 usually only need a facial image.)
What to Expect
Your first EES registration may take extra time. Be prepared for:
• Longer queues at immigration during busy periods
• Extra checks depending on airport and time of day
• Delays if several flights arrive at once
• Occasional additional document checks
Once registered, your details stay valid for around three years but this doesn’t guarantee a fast track lane. Waiting times will still vary, so always allow plenty of time.
If You’ve Booked a Private Transfer
Longer queues may delay you reaching your driver. To avoid issues:
• Check your transfer documents before travel
• Save the supplier’s emergency number
• Contact them if you’re delayed at immigration or baggage reclaim
• Keep your phone switched on and able to receive calls
If you exceed the supplier’s waiting time policy without making contact, it may be treated as a no show.
Flying Home
Allow extra time for check‑in, security and border control.
Arrive at least three hours before departure and head through airport formalities promptly. Some airports have extra checks or long walks to gates, so don’t leave it too late.
Top Tips for Smooth Travel
• Arrive at the airport in good time (minimum three hours)
• Keep passports and documents handy
• Have accommodation and return details ready
• Keep your phone charged and switched on
• Expect queues during busy travel periods
