A parent has issued a warning to others after a disturbing incident at Houndwell Park Playground this afternoon, during which a woman allegedly followed and confronted her and her young child.

The incident occurred at around 3:30pm, when the mother noticed a woman watching her 3½‑year‑old daughter “very closely” while she played.

Sensing something was wrong, she moved her child away from the play area, but said the woman continued to follow them at close distance.Family members who were present initially believed the woman might have been interested in their shopping bags, but it soon became clear that the child was the focus of her attention.

According to the mother, the woman continued to follow them as they left the play equipment, prompting fears for their safety.

When the mother confronted her, the woman allegedly became aggressive, shouting that the child had been “stolen” from her and claiming the girl was actually her own.

The woman reportedly moved towards the pair while shouting abuse, causing the mother to panic and call the police.

The woman fled as soon as she realised police were being contacted.Officers arrived within minutes and located the woman nearby after receiving a description and direction of travel.

Police later informed the mother that the woman was experiencing mental health difficulties and that no further action would be taken. She was taken back to her home, believed to be around 15 minutes from the playground.

The mother said she respects those who struggle with mental illness but described the situation as “terrifying” and expressed concern that individuals in crisis should receive appropriate support and supervision to ensure the safety of both themselves and the public.

She added that the incident has left her anxious about returning to the playground and shared her account as a warning to other parents to remain vigilant and trust their instincts.

The Home Office has announced a major tightening of student visa rules, warning that universities in England could be barred from recruiting international students if they fail to meet strict new performance standards.

Under the proposed measures, institutions will be required to maintain course completion rates of at least 90%.

Universities falling below that threshold would face penalties, including potential restrictions on enrolling overseas students a key source of income for many higher
education providers.

Ministers say high drop out rates can be a red flag for visa abuse, with some individuals allegedly entering the UK under the guise of study before moving into the illegal working economy instead of completing their courses.

Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones has confirmed that two people have been arrested following the violent disorder that broke out during protests in Southampton last night.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Jones said one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer, while another was detained for possession of a weapon.

She described the scenes as “unacceptable” and warned that further arrests are likely.
According to the minister, officers will now review drone footage and other recordings from the incident to identify additional suspects involved in the clashes.

The disorder unfolded near the home of Henry Nowak’s killer, where hundreds of protesters gathered before violence erupted.

Riot police were seen confronting crowds as objects were thrown and tensions escalated. Police say they are continuing to assess evidence and expect more action to follow.

The Tin Chapel, a Methodist church located on Bursledon Road, c 1918

The Tin Church was a simple corrugated iron mission building that served as one of the village’s earliest places of worship. Despite its modest materials, it became a warm and lively hub for Sunday services, community gatherings, and wartime prayers.

By the early 1900s, the little iron chapel stood as a symbol of a growing community finding its identity
