Discover Bhutan – ‘The Land of the Thunder Dragon’
Discover Bhutan with Redbird Travel for dramatic Himalayan landscapes, extraordinary monasteries, colourful festivals, rich Buddhist culture and a rare commitment to happiness, sustainability and low-impact tourism. It will be an unforgettable journey in a magical land.
In planning a visit there are some important things for you to consider:
1) The right accommodation for you. Bhutan offers accommodation ranging from simple family-run guesthouses and charming heritage lodges to refined boutique hotels and world-class luxury retreats, many featuring traditional architecture, warm hospitality, mountain views and excellent Bhutanese cuisine.
2) Timing: The months of September, October and November are reckoned to be the best time for a visit as the climate is mild and the mountain views clear. Also there are many ‘tsechus’ happening - unforgettable celebrations of masked dance, music and spirituality, offering rare insight into living Buddhist traditions while bringing entire communities together in spectacular Himalayan settings. Among the main ones are Wangdue Tsechu 19-21 September, Thimpu Tsechu 21-23 September, Gangtey tsechu 24-26 September and Jakar Tsechu 18-21 October.
3) The capital Thimphu is essential. This small city blends tradition and modernity with monasteries, artisan workshops, lively markets and striking contemporary Bhutanese architecture, all set within a peaceful Himalayan valley without traffic lights.
4) Beautiful Punakha enchants visitors with its magnificent riverside dzong, jacaranda blossoms, fertile valleys and warm climate, offering some of Bhutan’s most beautiful scenery and deeply atmospheric sacred sites.
5) And of course Paro Taktsang, also called the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is a sacred Buddhist complex dramatically perched on a cliffside about 900 meters above Bhutan’s Paro Valley. Standing at roughly 3,120 meters (10,240 feet) above sea level, it is one of Bhutan’s most revered spiritual sites and an iconic symbol of the nation.
