*POLITE NOTICE - Saturday 26th September*

Due to shortage of volunteers, The Pier will open at 12noon, instead of our usual 10am opening time.

Once we're open, weโ€™re delighted to be welcoming Southampton Amateur Radio Club to the pier this weekend, where theyโ€™ll be setting up a special amateur radio station.
Operating under the special callsign GB2HPR โ€“ Hythe Pier Railway, the team will be making radio contacts with other stations across the UK and potentially much further afield! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“ก

So stop by and say hello, see amateur radio in action and find out a little more about how it all works.

โš“ CAN YOU HELP US WITH HYTHE SCENE? โš“

Some of you may know that Hythe Scene, the main Hythe Ferry vessel, was included in the recent asset sale and has since been kept safe and sound temporarily at Town Quay.

We have now been asked to move her.
As she is out of certification and not currently fit for operation, weโ€™re hoping someone within our local maritime community may be able to help us find a safe temporary home for her, assist with getting her out of the water, or point us towards someone who can.

For anyone who may be able to help with lifting or storage, Hythe Scene has a 7.37m beam and a distinctive banana-shaped hull, so she does require some specialist consideration when being lifted.

Under the terms of the asset sale, selling her is not currently an option. We are therefore very mindful of the potentially significant costs involved in moving and storing her, which is why weโ€™re reaching out to the community.

In the immediate term, we can keep her temporarily alongside the Hythe pontoon. However, as many of you know, the pontoon itself requires substantial work, so this cannot be a long-term solution.

If you have suitable mooring or storage space, lifting facilities, marine contacts, equipment, or simply know somebody we should speak to, we would really appreciate hearing from you - [email protected] / [email protected]

Big thanks to Lee and Rob of Blue Funnel Cruises for assisting today!

Please get in touch or share this with anyone who might be able to help ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผโš“

Johnโ€™s not around today, so heโ€™s sent us his irregular "What the Friday" post to share....

๐Ÿ”ข Messing with numbers, and being a bit nerdyโ€ฆ

Everyone knows we currently have two World Record-holding Brush Tractor units on Hythe Pier: 16302 and 16307. But did you know theyโ€™re actually part of a batch of six units built in 1917?

โ€ข 16302 โ€“ Hythe Pier, โ€œEdwardโ€
โ€ข 16303 โ€“ Amberley Museum
โ€ข 16304 โ€“ Spares for 16302 & 16307 at Hythe
โ€ข 16305 โ€“ Welsh Slate Museum
โ€ข 16306 โ€“ Spares for 16303 at Amberley
โ€ข 16307 โ€“ Hythe Pier, โ€œGeraldโ€

So, of the six units built, we have the first and last of the batch โ€“ making Edward the first and Gerald the last!

When built, the tractor units were identified by the last digit of their electric motorโ€™s serial number, meaning they were originally numbered 2 to 7.

However, due to a quirk of fate (or perhaps dyslexia!) sometime in the last 100 years, โ€œ7โ€ was mislabelled as โ€œ1โ€.

So today, Gerald at Hythe โ€“ now known as tractor #1 โ€“ is actually the youngest of the siblings, while Edward, #2, is the eldest. Probably by only a matter of days or weeks! ๐ŸŽ‰

And if all these odd and even numbers are getting confusing, thereโ€™s an easy way to tell the twins apartโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘€ Look at the roof seam.

On the even-numbered Edward, the roof seam splits the roof into two equal sections. On odd-numbered Gerald, the roof join is off-centre, giving him odd-sized roof panels.

As for remembering which number is who, Gerald starts with the 7th letter of the alphabet, โ€œGโ€, so clearly this is tractor #1 :-o

So there you have it โ€“ youโ€™ll never look at the two World Record-holding Brush Tractors quite the same way again! ๐Ÿ˜Š

PS: Don't say "but Gerald has an orange lifebuoy" - we can only afford the one, and they share it depending on who's working (y)
