TailGating makes our journeys miserable - feeling the pressure of someone driving too close for the speed that you're travelling at adds to the pressure of driving, and it also increases the chances of us, and them, being involved in a road accident. Safe following is defined in the Highway Code as "at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front" - this translates to 25 yards at 30

mph, 49 yards at 50mph and 68 yards at 70mph. The problem is that most drivers are ignorant of these distances and, even if they knew them, wouldn't be able to judge them on the road. A TailGuardian sign goes a long way to solving this problem. The sign's unique design delivers a message to other drivers to pull back only when they are venturing into an unsafe following distance - outside that, the message is invisible. In recent trials with a national transport organisation, TailGuardian was seen to cut rear collisions by 60%. TailGuardian signs are in use with: Stagecoach (750 coaches), Arriva (1200 buses), The Highways Agency (7000 vehicles), Driving Schools (1300 vehicles) and thousands of other smaller organisations and individual car owners.

Here's some of the feedback I've had from buyers:

"Well impressed with the product you sent"
"I have received my TailGuardian & I'm pleased to say liking the results! I've noticed that most drivers are actually noticing it & doing the right thing!!"
"I have been using the TailGuardian now for nearly 2 weeks and have certainly noticed a difference!"

Targetted some email at Driving Instructors in the UK thinking that they would hopefully see the advantage of having a TailGuardian on their vehicles. The response has been staggering - more than 500 sold in the past couple of weeks!

Recent surveys have shown that only 9% of drivers could get to within 10% of the correct braking distances for a car moving at 30mph, 50mph and 70mph. Further, only 5% of motorists could get close to judging how far this distance was in real terms when asked to mark them out. TailGuardian is designed to remind drivers what the safe following distances are. The problem now, for me, is to get TailGuardians onto cars. This design is only 5½ inches square and is calibrated to show at 25 yards - the following distance for 30mph.
You can see the effect of this sign by looking at the one-tenth sized image below, then stepping back a couple of yards from your screen...

A trial last year with Arriva on 150 buses showed a 60% decrease in rear end shunts on buses fitted with TailGuardian. This resulted in an order for an additional 1100 TailGuardian decals to cover Arriva NW entire fleet.

Following the initial trial on 20 buses in Grampian area, Stagecoach rolled the use of TailGuardian across their network of UK coaches. The results of this rollout were recorgnised by Brake, the road safety charity, at their annual awards with TailGuardian being recognised in the fleet safety product of the year category.

This is where TailGuardian started - kitting out over 600 coaches across the UK for Stagecoach. These multispeed warnings are designed to warn drivers when they are too close for different road speeds.
