🍁 Everyone talks about Japan in spring. But what about autumn?

Cherry blossom season might get most of the attention, understandably so, but autumn transforms Japan in a completely different way

As temperatures cool, the endless forests, gardens and temple grounds gradually turn incredible shades of red, orange and gold, creating some of the most magical scenery all the way from the mountains right into the heart of Japan’s cities

Imagine wandering through Kyoto’s ancient temples framed by fiery maple trees, seeing Mount Fuji surrounded by autumn colour, or exploring the immaculate gardens of Kanazawa as the seasons change

And there’s so much more to the Japanese autumn than just the scenery

October and November generally bring cooler, more comfortable conditions for exploring, while seasonal ingredients like chestnuts and kabocha (Japanese pumpkins) start appearing on menus across the country. It’s a brilliant time to mix the energy of Tokyo with historic cities, peaceful countryside and maybe even a traditional ryokan stay, where an evening soaking in a steaming onsen feels especially inviting as the temperature starts to drop 🍂

Japan isn’t a destination we’d ever suggest rushing. Give it time, head beyond the obvious stops and you’ll discover so many different sides that are there waiting to be experienced

Thinking about Japan for 2026 or 2027? Get in touch and we’ll help create a unique itinerary built around exactly what you want to see and experience

🇬🇷 A stylish Cretan escape that might surprise you…

On Crete’s quieter southern coast, NUMO Ierapetra proves that a stylish adults-only escape can still offer a high standard of luxury without necessarily requiring an over-the-top budget

Set amongst evergreen gardens beside a black-sand beach, the hotel has a relaxed, contemporary feel, with earthy colours, natural materials and rooms scattered throughout the grounds like a little Cretan village. Some even come with their own private pool 🌿

Days here can be as lazy as you want them to be. Find a lounger beside the pool or beach, book a treatment at the Etherea Spa, grab a cocktail from MĂ re MĂ re, or stay up late into the night to enjoy live music and an open-air cinema beneath the stars

And because this is Greece, food rightly gets plenty of attention too. Tamarisk celebrates Greek flavours and local ingredients beside the beach, while Menoa takes a more contemporary Mediterranean approach with influences from different culinary regions

And being in Ierapetra means experiencing a quieter side of Crete, away from some of the island’s busier northern resorts, while still giving you plenty of opportunities to get out an explore

For us, NUMO is a great reminder that luxury is about how a holiday feels, not just how much it costs

Fancy a stylish Greek escape without blowing the budget? Get in touch and we’ll help find the right one for you

🌋 This is when package protection really matters…

Recently we had a family enjoying their holiday in Sicily when, the day before they were due to fly home, Mount Etna erupted

Flights were cancelled and suddenly their journey home wasn’t going ahead as planned

Had they booked their flights and hotel separately, they’d have needed to rearrange everything themselves. The airline may have moved them onto another flight, but finding and paying for somewhere to stay in the meantime, then trying to recover those costs through travel insurance, would have been their responsibility

Thankfully, they had booked a package with us

Alternative flights were arranged for a few days later and accommodation found for the unexpected extra nights, all at no additional cost to our clients. They could concentrate on themselves and their family while everything else was sorted for them

And that’s something we think gets overlooked when comparing a package holiday with booking everything separately

A package isn’t simply a convenient way to combine your flights, hotel and transfers. The Package Travel Regulations give you important legal protections when things don’t go to plan, including responsibilities on the organiser to assist you while you’re away

Could you save a few quid booking everything yourself? Sometimes, maybe. Although you might be surprised how competitive package prices can be in the first place

But when a volcano erupts, a flight is cancelled or the unexpected happens, suddenly price isn’t the only thing that matters

And when you book your package with us, you’ve got us here to help, we can speak to the people who need speaking to and fight your corner

Because good travel planning isn’t just about getting you there. It’s about making sure you’re looked after when things don’t go to plan

Get in touch when you’re planning your next holiday and we’ll make sure you know exactly how your trip is protected

🇲🇪 There’s something about Kotor that’s difficult to put into words…

Early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive and the little squares fill with cafĂŠ tables, Kotor feels completely different

Walking through the old town, you’ll find centuries-old stone buildings glowing in the morning light, washing hanging from windows, cats wandering through quaint alleyways and the occasional local going about their morning. Surrounded by ancient walls and mountains that rise almost vertically behind the town, there are moments when Kotor feels less like somewhere you’re visiting and more like somewhere you’ve stumbled back in time

It’s one of our favourite places in Europe, but Kotor itself is really just the beginning

A short journey around the bay brings you to Perast, a tiny waterfront town of Venetian palaces, church towers and incredible views. Take a boat across to Our Lady of the Rocks, stop for lunch by the water's edge and stay long enough to see the bay enveloped by spectacular oranges and purples as the sun sets on another day in paradise

Then there’s Porto Montenegro in nearby Tivat, offering an almost complete contrast. Superyachts replace fishing boats, with smart boutiques, waterfront restaurants and cocktail bars surrounding one of the Adriatic’s most impressive marinas

And you don’t necessarily need to be staying within Kotor itself to experience all of this

The Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort is one of our favourite options, sitting directly on the waterfront just a short taxi ride from the old town. You get the mountains and water that make the bay so special, but in a peaceful resort setting away from the bustle of the centre. Some of its sea-view rooms even have their own terraces and private hot tubs overlooking the bay

Kotor may be the name everyone recognises, but give this part of Montenegro a little time and you soon realise that the magic stretches right around the bay and beyond

Fancy discovering it for yourself? Get in touch and we’ll help you experience the Bay of Kotor in a way that goes far beyond a quick visit to the old town

🍂 5 Under-the-Radar European City Breaks for Autumn

Paris, Rome and Barcelona will always have their place, but some of Europe’s most rewarding city breaks can be found away from the usual favourites

If you’re looking for somewhere different this autumn, here are five cities we think deserve a place on your shortlist:

🇲🇪 Kotor, Montenegro | Scenery & History
A UNESCO-listed medieval old town beneath soaring mountains on the beautiful Bay of Kotor. Autumn brings a slower pace, perfect for exploring its winding streets, historic fortifications and spectacular surroundings

🇪🇸 León, Spain | Architecture & Food
Often overlooked in favour of Spain’s better-known cities, León combines magnificent Gothic architecture, centuries of history and a fantastic tapas scene. Don’t miss its spectacular cathedral and the bars of Barrio Húmedo

🇳🇴 Bergen, Norway | Spectacular Scenery
Colourful waterfront buildings, historic streets, mountains and fjords make Bergen unlike your typical city break. Explore UNESCO-listed Bryggen before taking the Fløibanen funicular for sweeping views across the city

🇸🇮 Ljubljana, Slovenia | Relaxed Escape
Small, green and wonderfully walkable, Ljubljana is perfect for a gentler city break. Wander beside the Ljubljanica River, explore the hilltop castle and settle into one of the city’s waterside cafés

🇵🇹 Braga, Portugal | Art & Culture
Braga combines centuries of Portuguese history with a creative contemporary side. Historic churches and grand architecture sit alongside galleries and a growing arts scene, offering an intriguing alternative to Portugal’s more familiar cities

Sometimes the best city breaks are the ones you hadn’t thought of before!

There’s something undeniably special about a California road trip

One day you’re gazing across the granite cliffs and waterfalls of Yosemite National Park. The next, you’re following the twists and turns of the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping in charming coastal towns like Monterey and Santa Barbara before soaking up the atmosphere of Los Angeles. Then, just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find yourself beneath the bright lights of Las Vegas. Every day brings a completely different experience, and that’s what makes California such an unforgettable destination 🇺🇸

One of our favourite examples is the California Explorer 15-night self-drive itinerary from North American Travel Service, which includes international flights, car hire and a carefully planned route through some of the state’s most iconic landscapes and cities. Prices start from just £2,999pp, based on two adults travelling from London Heathrow in October 2026, with all mandatory taxes and fees included

Of course, no two road trips need to be the same. Perhaps you’d spend longer amongst the giant sequoias, detour into Napa Valley’s vineyards, explore more of the national parks, or continue on to the Grand Canyon. The beauty of a self-drive holiday is that it can be shaped around what you want to experience 🚗

Where would your dream California road trip take you? Let us know below, or get in touch to start planning your own unforgettable journey

31/07/2026

Hidden away within the spectacular Durmitor National Park, the Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is one of Montenegro’s most breathtaking natural treasures. Surrounded by dense pine forests and framed by dramatic mountain peaks, the lake feels wonderfully peaceful, whether you’re taking a gentle walk or bike ride around its shoreline, enjoying a picnic with a view, or just taking a moment to appreciate the scenery

While it’s stunning during the warmer months, when the crystal clear water reflects the surrounding landscape in vivid shades of green and blue, winter transforms Black Lake into something equally magical. A blanket of fresh snow settles across the forest and mountains, creating a scene that could've come straight out of a fairy tale ❄️

Montenegro is often deservedly celebrated for its beautiful coastline, but places like the Black Lake remind you that some of the country’s greatest experiences lie inland, waiting to be discovered

So, what do you think? Could Black Lake be Europe’s prettiest lake, or is there another that deserves the title? Let us know in the comments 👇
