📦 A cheaper box doesn’t always mean cheaper packaging.

The price on the quote is only part of the story.

The wrong packaging can mean:

⏱️ More time spent packing
🚛 Less efficient deliveries
📦 More tape and void fill
🏭 More storage space
💥 More damaged products and returns

Sometimes spending less on the box simply moves the cost somewhere else.

At Garthwest, we look beyond price per box and consider how packaging performs across your whole operation.

Because the best-value box isn't necessarily the cheapest one.

It's the one that does its job properly.

Could your packaging be costing you more than you think?

⚽🏆 Some things are worth bringing back...

Back in 2022, our team at Garthwest put our design and manufacturing skills to the test by creating our very own corrugated prototype of the World Cup trophy.

It may not have been the trophy that came home, but it certainly showed what can be achieved with a little creativity, craftsmanship and a lot of team spirit.

Tonight, as England takes to the pitch once again, we're proudly dusting off our cardboard trophy and hoping this is the year the real one follows. 🤞🏆

Good luck to England's team from everyone at Garthwest.

We'll be cheering you on every step of the way!

Bring it home! 🦁🦁🦁

🚚 Ever wondered why a heavy-duty double-wall case still fails during transit? 🤔
At Garthwest, we believe that context beats thickness every time. When it comes to corrugated packaging, failure often isn’t about strength; it's about the design for the journey.
Here are 4 must-dos when specifying transit packaging to ensure your products arrive safely:
1️⃣ Design for the journey – not just the warehouse
Different transport modes (sea freight, air cargo, courier networks) introduce unique stress patterns. Start with the distribution map, not just the board grade!
2️⃣ Engineer for compression & humidity (Sea Freight)
Long container dwell times and high humidity can weaken stacking strength over time. Selecting the right flute combination and liner quality can protect against moisture-related issues.
3️⃣ Balance stiffness and weight (Air Freight)
Air transit brings vibration and pressure variations. Choosing the right flute profile delivers stability while keeping weight costs in check — strength-to-weight ratio matters!
4️⃣ Prioritise impact resistance for the last mile
With parcel networks facing drops and knocks, liner performance and impact resistance can be more crucial than stacking strength alone.
🔑 The takeaway?
Instead of asking for a “thicker” box, ask for the right flute profile and liner combination tailored to the actual stresses your packaging will encounter.

At Garthwest, we align board specifications with real-world distribution conditions, protecting your product, reputation, and margins.

💖 📦 What’s Your Packaging Love Language?

You could frame it around the 5 love languages and tie each to packaging benefits:

💪 Strength – Protective corrugated that keeps products safe in transit

🌍 Sustainability – Recyclable, responsibly sourced materials

🎨 Presentation – High-impact print & POS that turns heads in-store

🤝 Partnership – Long-term, collaborative relationships

⚡ Reliability – Delivered on time, every time
..or perhaps the lot 💖

At Garthwest - Cardboard Packaging & POS Experts, we believe great packaging isn’t just about boxes. It’s about relationships that last. 💖

On paper, shaving a few pence off a box looks like a quick win.

In reality, it often triggers a much bigger (and hidden) cost problem.
📦 Industry analysis shows that as little as a 1% increase in transit damage can completely wipe out any savings made by reducing box quality or board strength.
Why?
Because the true cost of damaged goods isn’t just the product:

• Replacement stock
• Return logistics
• Additional freight
• Labour & admin time
• Customer service impact
• Brand trust erosion

One real-world example showed a switch to cheaper corrugated saved £0.12–£0.15 per unit — but increased damage rates enough to create thousands in extra monthly costs, turning a “saving” into a net loss.

For buyers and procurement teams, this is the uncomfortable truth:
👉 Packaging cost ≠ packaging value

Well-specified corrugated packaging isn’t over-engineering — it’s risk control.
The right board grade, structure and print process protects product, reduces returns, and lowers total cost across the supply chain, not just on the invoice.
Smart procurement looks beyond unit price and asks:
“What does this decision cost us end-to-end?”

That’s where real savings live. 💡

🌱 What’s really on your cardboard packaging?

Not all inks are created equal. Many traditional solvent-based or UV inks can contaminate recycling streams, making fibre recovery harder and more expensive. In fact, studies show that ink and coating choice can impact recyclability by up to 30% in corrugated recovery processes.

That’s why water-based flexographic inks are becoming the go-to for responsible packaging. They’re:
✔️ Low VOC
✔️ Designed to disperse cleanly during recycling
✔️ Fully aligned with paper and board circularity goals

At Garthwest, our flexo printing capability uses water-based inks, helping brands achieve the visual impact they need without compromising recyclability. It’s a small technical decision that makes a big sustainability difference ♻️

Smart print choices today = cleaner recycling tomorrow.

🚨 Corrugated packaging buyers: this stat matters more than you think.

Less than 15% of global packaging waste is actually recycled — even though corrugated board is one of the most recyclable materials available.

So what’s the risk?

👉 Not all “paper-based” packaging performs the same in real recycling streams
👉 Over-engineered coatings, inks, laminations, and mixed materials can quietly kill recyclability
👉 Buyers are increasingly being asked to prove actual recovery, not just material type

📦 In 2026, corrugated procurement is shifting from:
“Is it paper-based?”
to
“Will this board be recovered at scale, in our key markets?”

The smartest buyers are now prioritising:
✔ Fibre recovery rates
✔ Board simplicity over cosmetic complexity
✔ Supplier transparency on recycled content and performance data

💬 Are recyclability claims part of your supplier scorecards yet — or still assumed?

🚨 Packaging procurement reality check (that few are talking about):

Less than 15% of global packaging waste is actually recycled — yet over 70% of brands report using “recyclable” packaging.

That gap isn’t a sustainability problem.
It’s a procurement visibility problem.

👉 Recyclable in theory ≠ recyclable in practice
👉 Infrastructure, material complexity, and local collection rules matter more than material claims
👉 Buyers are now being held accountable for what really happens AFTER disposal

📦 In 2026, the smartest packaging teams aren’t asking:
“Is this recyclable?”

They’re asking:
“Will this be recycled, where our customers actually live?”

This is quickly becoming a commercial risk, not just an environmental one.

💬 Curious — how is your procurement team validating real-world recyclability today?

Unsure how to go about it, get in touch we can help.
