Safer Travel West Yorkshire

Safer Travel West Yorkshire Keeping bus travel safe Safer Travel works to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on public transport across West Yorkshire.

Safer Travel West Yorkshire

The Safer Travel partnership was formed in February 2011 by the local transport executive Metro, the 45 bus operators of the region and West Yorkshire Police. The West Yorkshire Police Transport Liaison Officer leads regular covert and overt operations with Special Constables and NPTs that have established a clear relationship between Police and public transport. This

has resulted in a 34 percent reduction in damage to buses, 220 less crimes, an approximated saving of over £200 000 across the partnership. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-21635210

Bus drivers and passengers are encouraged to contact Safer Travel with nuisance and anti-social behaviour concerns so they can be addressed at the earliest opportunity and escalation prevented. Well the team was out and about on Friday night on a plain clothes operation in the Pudsey, Bramley & Stanningley areas. The aim of the operation was to tackle anti social behaviour at Bus Stations & bus stops and to identify the youths involved in this and bus related crime. Although it was a cold evening we managed to identify at least 21 youths believed to be involved in this unacceptable behaviour. In addition we issued "Directions to leave", "took youths home & spoke with parents", "poured alcohol down the drain" and gathered valuable intelligence to enable further enforcement action to be taken. All in all a very good result.
