From Apprentice to Maintenance Manager ✅

Matt began his apprenticeship on the Manchester Ship Canal in 2008 and has spent more than 15 years building his expertise across sites, disciplines and leadership roles. Today, he leads maintenance across the canal as Maintenance Manager, proof of where hands-on experience and continuous development can take you.

"I always knew engineering was the path for me and learning hands-on from experienced engineers was the perfect foundation."

"When I joined Peel Ports Group, I did not realise just how large or complex the business was. I learned core mechanical skills across different sites, moved into water management, then into supervision, and eventually into my current role as Maintenance Manager."

"Some key moments in my 15+ year journey include: "

• Completing my apprenticeship and being recognised for my efforts ✅
• Maintaining historic infrastructure dating back to the 1800s ⚓
• Gaining confidence, problem solving ability, and effective communication skills 💡
• Continuing my development through an advanced apprenticeship up to degree level 📈

"Today, I am proud to lead maintenance across the Manchester Ship Canal, support a talented team, and help keep critical, century old systems running safely and reliably."

"My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship: go for it!"

"The real-world experience and knowledge you gain from experienced engineers is invaluable and opens the door to long-term career growth."

"From one of Peel Ports Group's first engineering apprentices to Engineering Manager - my journey shows what’s possible when hands‑on learning meets real opportunity." ✅

Hear from Kieran Sait, on his journey from Apprentice to Engineering Manager.

"I joined the group in 2011 on a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship because practical learning suited me far better than textbooks. Being among the first apprentices came with pressure but it pushed me to excel, supported by experienced engineers, strong mentors, and exposure to equipment you simply do not find anywhere else."

"Since completing my apprenticeship, I have progressed from Mechanical Technician to Team Leader, Supervisor, and now Engineering Manager, leading the Liverpool infrastructure engineering team and overseeing critical assets across the Port."

"Alongside this, I am completing my mechanical engineering degree apprenticeship and continuing to build the technical and leadership skills that shape my approach today."

"For me, the apprenticeship delivered everything: real‑world experience, problem‑solving skills, confidence, and a foundation for long‑term growth.
If you are considering an apprenticeship at Peel Ports Group, go for it!"

"You will gain industry‑leading experience, develop quickly, and open the door to a genuinely rewarding career."

"How would I describe the journey? Rewarding. Enjoyable. Valuable "

A successful careers event at the Port of Sheerness!

Yesterday, we held our first Careers Event at the Port of Sheerness. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the work of the Port and the variety of opportunities for training, development and career progression.

We had students from local schools join us in the afternoon, who were excited to engage with some hands on activities, using remote control vehicles to manoeuvre items around a set of obstacles to safely, as well as the chance to steer a large container ship into Port using the Marine simulator.

We also highlighted our commitment to safety and our Golden Rules using a fantastic Lego Port designed and built by our EHS team in Medway, including a range of hazards which many were able to identify. A fun and educational activity for all!

In the evening, our team enjoyed welcoming members of the local community, with many of those who had lived around the Port for many years expressing surprise about the scale of activities behind the Port Gates, as well as the diverse range of people we employ to ensure the operation runs safely and efficiently for our customers.

Feedback from those attending, including students, teachers and the community, was overwhelmingly positive with many expressing their interest in exploring career opportunities with us.

For our teams, it was a great opportunity to share their passion for the work they do on a daily basis that impacts positively not only on the local community but also the wider economy.

A massive thank you to everyone involved!

Join us in congratulating the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust as our 2025 Group Marine Environmental Award Winners! 🏆

The MGET was set up in 2010 following the construction of the Mersey Gateway Bridge to conserve and protect 1,600 hectares of the upper Mersey Estuary. 🌊

Since its establishment, the passionate team at the Trust have engaged with local stakeholders to develop environmental stewards and enable the long-term protection and function of the important ecosystem services that the estuary provides.

Recent work with Natural England under their species recovery project has seen projects at Wigg Island and Widnes Warth to improve breeding habitats for ground nesting birds of skylark, lapwing, oystercatchers, and common terns. The projects have also enabled collaboration amongst students and local conservation partners to monitor changes and detect protected species through innovative sampling.

Recently the trust has been working with over 2,000 local school children to develop Mersey Estuary Ambassadors, educating students about the fantastic environments and species found across the Estuary. The Trust’s Research & Biodiversity Board provides an additional opportunity for collaborative research across coastal, educational and terrestrial sectors. Since 2017 MGET have worked with over 50 students on various environmental projects.

The Trust also undertakes a great deal of community engagement, from coordinating wellbeing walks to offering opportunities for the community to come together through BioBlitzes to record wildlife and connect with nature.

Congratulations to the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust for their well deserving award

Protecting our waters, 🌊

Last week, our Mersey Marine team took part in a large-scale incident response exercise led by Ambipar, designed to test and strengthen our preparedness for marine pollution events.

The scenario, a simulated bunker spill inside the Liverpool Dock System, brought together multiple agencies and partners to rehearse response procedures and keep our teams ready for real-world challenges.

Exercises like this are a vital part of how we protect our waters and how we keep our ports operating safely and responsibly. A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day a success.
