With a range of events and experiences for the whole family. See our website for details of operating days & timetables. Welcome to the Official Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway page! Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a wel

come change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. All of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.

🚂Feedback Friday☀

"We had a wonderful first-class experience on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. From start to finish everything was well organised, comfortable and enjoyable. The staff were friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable.

The first-class carriage was lovely, and the picnic basket and cream tea exceeded our expectations. Everything was extremely fresh, very tasty and there was plenty of it. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were delicious and made the trip feel extra special.

The railway itself offers beautiful scenery and a relaxing journey behind a beautifully maintained steam train. It was a fantastic day out and excellent value for money" - C.Y. via TripAdvisor

Are we open this weekend? We certainly are! The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is running too and its excellent tearoom open to all.

It’s the weekend of the Le Mans 24 Hours so the perfect time to remind you that we now have a much more prominent display of Le Mans and GT cars - wonder who we will be adding to the backdrop after this weekend?

If you’d like to visit, the essential times are between 10.30 and 3.30.
