Can expedition cruising be a genuine force for good? 🌍

In our upcoming session, **Expedition Cruising as a Force for Good**, we will explore three important questions:

🔬 How can guests contribute to valuable scientific research through citizen science?

🤝 What makes a partnership with local communities, scientists and conservation organisations truly meaningful?

🌱 How can we ensure that positive initiatives create a lasting impact and go beyond simply ticking a box?

We are looking forward to an open and honest discussion, filled with practical examples of how expedition cruising can support the destinations, communities and environments at the heart of every journey.

Crisis leadership: lessons from the hantavirus outbreak aboard m/v Hondius

Earlier this year, Oceanwide Expeditions experienced one of the most difficult periods in its history when an Andes hantavirus outbreak affected guests and crew aboard m/v Hondius. Thirteen cases were reported, and three people tragically lost their lives.

At the ECN Conference, Oceanwide Expeditions CEO Rémi Bouysset will speak openly about leading the company through this unprecedented situation.

Rémi will discuss the challenges of making urgent decisions as events continued to develop, communicating with guests, crew, families and the public, and working with medical teams, health authorities and international partners.

He will also share the lessons Oceanwide Expeditions has taken from the experience and consider how the expedition cruise sector can strengthen its preparation for future operational and public health emergencies.

This promises to be a candid and important session about communication, responsibility, resilience and leadership during a human tragedy.

What really influences a traveller when choosing an expedition cruise?

Is it the destination, wildlife, ship, operator, expert guides or the reassurance of booking with a knowledgeable travel advisor?

Last year, George Kipouros’ Wanderlust reader survey session was one of the most popular at the ECN Conference. The room was full, with delegates taking photos of the results as they appeared on screen, demonstrating just how valuable current consumer insight is to our industry.

This year, George returns to reveal the latest Wanderlust reader research, offering fresh insights into the motivations, expectations and booking decisions of travellers interested in expedition cruising.

We won’t reveal the findings before the conference, but we would love to hear your prediction:

What do you think has the greatest influence on a traveller’s decision to book an expedition cruise?

Tell us in the comments, then join us on Day 2 of the ECN Conference to discover what the research reveals.

We have some exciting team news to share! 🎉

Please join us in giving a very warm welcome to Charlotte Ayling and Iggy Gutauskas, who have recently joined the ECN team.

Charlotte joins us as Executive Assistant to the CEO and will be helping with everything from marketing and projects to trade coordination, operations and conference preparations. Some of you may already know Charlotte from her time as a travel advisor. Her passion for expedition cruising began after attending an ECN Conference, so it feels very fitting that she is now part of the team behind it! 🌊

Iggy joins us as Business Development Manager, bringing nearly ten years of travel industry experience from Virgin Holidays, Jacobs Media Group, Jacada and Audley Travel. He will be getting to know our members and partners, building new relationships and exploring new opportunities for ECN.

They have both joined us at a very busy and exciting time, with our third annual conference taking place at Glaziers Hall in London on 29 and 30 September. We are delighted to have their experience, enthusiasm and fresh ideas on board.

Many of you will meet Charlotte and Iggy at the conference. In the meantime, please say hello and give them a warm ECN welcome in the comments! 👋

Expedition cruising goes far beyond Antarctica and the Arctic but which clients are the best fit for its emerging destinations? 🌍

🌴 For experienced expedition cruisers, these regions offer an exciting next frontier after the poles or the Galápagos.

🦎 For wildlife enthusiasts, they bring extraordinary biodiversity, rare encounters and expert-led exploration.

🛶 For culturally curious travellers, the appeal lies in remote communities, local storytelling and meaningful connections.

🥾 For active adventurers, small ships provide access to immersive landings, activities and places beyond the usual routes.

✨ For luxury clients seeking something different, they combine comfort and exceptional service with a genuine sense of discovery.

During our Day 2 workshop, Beyond the Poles: The Next Generation of Expedition Destinations, expedition cruise operators will help travel advisors identify the right clients, communicate the value and sell emerging regions with greater confidence.

Which destination do you think will become expedition cruising’s next big frontier? Tell us in the comments. 👇

What does the future of expedition cruising look like and what questions should our industry leaders be answering?

On Day 2 of the ECN Conference, our leaders panel will explore the opportunities, pressures and decisions shaping the next chapter of expedition cruising.

We’ll be asking:

🌍 Where will the next phase of growth come from and how can the industry grow responsibly without compromising the expedition experience?

🧭 How will changing traveller expectations, emerging destinations and technology redefine expedition cruising?

🤝 What should operators, travel advisors and industry partners do differently today to create a stronger, more resilient sector for tomorrow?

Moderated by Lyn Hughes, Founding Editor of Wanderlust, the panel will bring together leaders from HX, Oceanwide Expeditions, UnCruise Adventures and Kaptio.

Now we want to hear from you: What is the one question you would like our industry leaders to answer?

Share it in the comments below. We’ll select some of the most thought-provoking submissions to put to the panel on 30 September.
