We recently had the pleasure of welcoming a special guest to our London headquarters, following a dramatic rescue carried out by a Zodiac Maritime vessel in the Atlantic Ocean earlier this year.
Benoit Bourguet had been competing in the Worldâs Toughest Row â a gruelling 3,000 mile unsupported transatlantic rowing race from the Canary Islands to Antigua. Unfortunately, just days out from completing the challenge, his rowing boat was struck by two rogue waves in severe weather, capsizing him in the middle of the ocean.
BenoĂŽt found himself alone in a life raft, adrift in 4â5 metre seas and force 6â7 winds. His urgent distress call was subsequently relayed via the United States Coast Guard. Responding to the call, Zodiac Maritimeâs tanker, MT Horten, immediately diverted over 100 miles through heavy seas to help. Manoeuvring a huge 333 metre, 300,000 DWT vessel next to the tiny life raft in extremely challenging conditions with exceptional skill and precision, MT Hortenâs Master and crew successfully located, rescued and brought Benoit safely on board.
In a truly memorable meeting, our Chief Operating Officer, Tanuj Luthra, and Director of QHSSE, Ritesh Prakashan, had the privilege of sitting down with BenoĂŽt and his partner Laurence â hearing first-hand about his extraordinary Atlantic rowing journey and answering their questions about Zodiac Maritime and how the rescue was coordinated.
Following the rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard and the vesselâs flag state commended the MT Hortenâs Master and crew for their professionalism, calm coordination and outstanding seamanship.
This rescue is powerful reminder of the enduring principle that mariners help mariners - in this case, one of the largest vessels on the seas helping one of the smallest.
