Pernilla Iggstrom Art Visual artist exploring socio-cultural norms. IG:
www.pernillaiggstrom.com I explore both actual and imagined places. The paint becomes skin.

Separation and Integration

My paintings are the result of a process of investigation into my personal cultural heritage – a journey which explores the effect on my own identity of being born into one culture, then subsequently being adopted into another very different one thousands of miles away. Using source material derived from my personal archive of family albums and landscape images of Swede

n and Korea from the Internet, I begin by creating collages and other material experimental pieces - developing an amalgam of an experienced life and lost experiences. Through the activity of ripping (separation) and reassembling (integration) the images into collages, the psychological process of piecing together who I am and where I come from, is activated. Just like fragments of an identity are glued together by a variety of experiences, the jagged collage is taking shape. These collages then become the source for further material experiments - translating these collages into paintings, allows me to increase the personal element and add reference. The material processes, variation of paint applications and use of strong colours are analogous to my investigations into my past where words like nostalgia and memory are important. The paint is sitting on the surface, creating tension. While the resin encapsulates the time, whether is it the past, present or the future, or a combination of them, the cavity, whenever it is present, communicates between the past and the present, the interior with the exterior and the psychological with the physical. The painting process allows me to expand the potential of my ideas – reducing the overly specific imagery to something I hope is more universally accessible. My personal story is of course core, since it is what motivated my investigations into notions of identity, but I do feel there are also far reaching aspects to what I am saying that I want to address. Influences include Candice Breitz’s Factum series which explore the concept of identity in relation to the community, René Magritte’s play on illusion and reality, John Kᴓrner’s painterly colour combinations, the way Tom LaDuke’s different painterly applications create a tension between memory and the present, the mood that Willem Sasnal’s paintings exude, John Stezaker’s play on perception in his collages, and Gerhard Richter’s search of various methods of expression.

When the BRIDGE founders Pernilla Iggström and Christel Lundberg were thinking about the ethos of BRIDGE and exhibiting in Brixton, they asked themselves “What keeps the English people together? What do they all share and have in common?” The answer was a mug of tea – a cuppa! There aren’t many things a mug of tea can’t solve. “And how can we use that to bring the locals of Brixton together with BRIDGE?”

“We didn’t just want to set up an exhibition and then leave, but to explore and integrate Brixton and its community in some way. With its rich history, Brixton is really relevant to what BRIDGE is about.”

Knocking on the doors of people who are living and/or working in Brixton as a way to break the ice, Christel and Pernilla initiated conversations by asking them if they could show them their favourite tea mug and if they could take a photo of them holding it. They used this art intervention as a way to gain deeper knowledge of the community. The people they met opened up and generously shared some quite personal stories about their lives. MUG is a continuous process and the two curators are still in touch with the locals they interviewed. The curators’ experience of these encounters will be presented at BRIDGE2024 in September.

Join our exciting journey by signing up to our mailing list to receive updates on the forthcoming BRIDGE2024 that will take place on 20 - 25 September, 2024, in the historical premises of Downstairs at the Department Store, 248 Ferndale Road, London, SW9 8FR.

I'm so thrilled to present to you the second edition of BRIDGE which this year is hosted by my amazing art group ArtCan in Brixton. Christel Lundberg and I have been working on BRIDGE2024 since the beginning of the year after a successful BRIDGE2023 at Tjörnedala Konsthall in Southern Sweden in November/December last year.

* * *

BRIDGE is a cross-cultural artistic collaboration between UK based ArtCan and Swedish ÖSKG/Tjörnedala konsthall. The purpose is to connect across physical and metaphorical borders to break down cultural, social and political barriers in order to increase diversity, understanding and inclusion. Using art as a common ground, this year's edition will see 13 pairs share their personal and creative journey in 13 installations. The variety of mediums will include, textile, glass, sculpture, drawings, paintings, sound, video, among others.

BRIDGE2024 will host a public programme of Artists Talks, workshops, performances and a Private View (by invitation only). The building of Downstairs at the Department Store was built in 1877 and was the first purpose built department store in England. It made Brixton the shopping capital of South London likened to today's Oxford Street. BRIDGE2024 is about connecting with the rich history of Brixton and its citizens.

The two curators Pernilla Iggstrom (ArtCan) and Christel Lundberg (ÖSKG) are working on a project called MUG which will be presented at BRIDGE2024. What do the British people have in common? What connects them? There's not much a nice cup of tea can't solve. The project is based on interviews with the locals, about how it is to live in Brixton now and how it was before.

The exhibition is open 10am - 5pm every day.
Warmly welcome!

Still a few spaces left for tonight's event I'm hosting with fellow ArtCan artist Diane Frost to raise funds towards the costs for us artists going to exhibit in BRIDGE in Sweden in 2 weeks.

Sign up at Eventbrite below and bring a bottle of red for the mulled wine we'll be making.

Warmly Welcome!

♡♡♡

Thursday 2 November, 18.00 – 20.00 hrs, at Empress Studios, 13 Empress place SW6, West Brompton /Earls Court tube stations.

Diane and Pernilla would be delighted if you could join us for an arty Guy Fawkes Night with mulled wine and pancakes to enjoy while listening to ArtCan artist Catherine Jacob talk about her art practice and participation in BRIDGE, our cross-border group show.

Informed by her parallel career in research psychology, Catherine works with positive states of ambiguity in art to help us build connections with each other and the natural world we are part of.

It’ll be an excellent opportunity to mingle and meet other creatives as well as support the beautiful and unique art project that BRIDGE is.

Bring a bottle of your choice. We gratefully accept donations on the night which will go entirely towards the ArtCan BRIDGE project costs.

All Warmly Welcome!

For one year I've been working very hard on BRIDGE with my co-curator Christel Lundberg Manager of ÖSKG/TjörnedalaKonsthall. BRIDGE is our vision and long term art project to bring cultures closer, across physical and metaphorical borders. BRIDGE has been realised with the great support of Tjörnedala Konsthall and ArtCan.

ArtCan is a not-for-profit arts organisation, and thus I'm not being paid for the hours each evening I spend on planning this fantastic event. Art is an enormous passion and I'm the happiest when I'm surrounded by it and like-minded.

The 10 ArtCan artists and I are trying to raise funds to go towards our expenses surrounding our participation in Sweden 18 November to 10 December, 2023, in Baskemölla, North of Simrishamn in Southern Sweden.

Bidding and winning, you'd not only go home with a one of a kind art work but would also support the award winning and the most supportive art group I know of. ArtCan never charges any membership fees, nor commissions on sales at exhibitions.
