Walking around Masjid an-Nabawi you will find the names of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ woven into the streets around it.

They were the men and women who gave up their homes, wealth and, for many, ultimately their lives for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

The Muhajirun — those who left Makkah for the sake of their faith.

The Ansar — the people of Madinah who opened their homes, their wealth and their lives to them.

The Islam we practise today reached us through generations of sacrifice.

These names weren’t placed here by chance or as mere decoration.

They were precisely designated by official municipal and planning authorities following historical mapping of early Madinah:

or owned land,

in those exact neighborhoods during the prophetic era.

In the 6th year of the migration (hijrah) Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and roughly 1,400 Muslims set out from Madinah toward Makkah.

Intending only to perform Umrah.

When the Quraysh heard of their approach, they block them and threatened armed conflict if the Muslims tried to force their way in.

The Prophet ﷺ camped at Hudaybiyyah (on the outskirts of Makkah) and sought to negotiate.

Uthman ibn Affan (RA) was nominated.

He was sent into Makkah because Uthman (RA) belonged to a powerful clan (Banu Umayyah) and had strong familial protection there. 

Uthman (RA) delivered the Prophet’s message that the Muslims had only come to visit the Sacred House peacefully.

The Quraysh didn’t bend.

But the Quraysh leaders told Uthman (RA) that he could perform the Tawaf of the Kaa’ba if he wished to do so himself. 

Uthman (RA) declined, declaring that he would never perform Tawaf while the Prophet ﷺ and his fellow believers were blocked from doing so. 

Soon after, rumours spread that Uthman (RA) had been killed.

The Muslims pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ, ready to stand together.

Then the situation changed when it was assured that Uthman (RA) was alive. And negotiations led to the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.

To many of the companions, its terms felt difficult.

However,

Allah SWT called it “Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph”
(Surah Al-Fath 48:1)

And from that treaty came opportunities that would eventually lead to the peaceful conquest of Makkah.

If you have ever travelled to Madinah for Umrah or Hajj, you have probably heard this nasheed.

It is often described as the song the people of Madinah sang to welcome the Prophet ﷺ when he arrived after the Hijrah.

It has been passed down for generations.

It is beautiful.

It is deeply familiar.

But the reality is not as certain as the story we often hear.

🌍The Geographical Inaccuracy:

The nasheed begins:

“The full moon has risen upon us from the valley of Wada‘.”

But the valley of al-Wada‘ lies to the north of Madinah, towards the direction of Syria.

The Prophet ﷺ was travelling from Makkah, which lies to the south.

Ibn al-Qayyim pointed out this geographical inaccuracy in his discussion on this.

✍️The Wrong Name:

The lyrics continues:

“You have come and honoured Al-Madinah.”

At the time, the city was known as and called by the locals as Yathrib.

Later, the Prophet ﷺ renamed to it as Al-Madinah.

⛓️‍💥Weak Narration :

It is attributed through a later narrator, with a significant gap between him and the actual event.

Because there is no connected chain reaching back to the Companions who witnessed the Prophet ﷺ arriving in Madinah, the report cannot be established as authentic.

Shaykh Al Albani graded the narration of this specific incident as weak.

So while the nasheed remains beloved across the Muslim world because of it’s beautiful and respectful poetry towards the Prophet ﷺ,

We should be careful about presenting the story as the Seerah.

The Seerah is too precious for us to fill its gaps with stories simply because they have become familiar.

Sometimes, loving the Prophet ﷺ also means being careful about what we attribute to him.

There are entrances in the Haram where the journey towards the Ka’bah begins before you even step inside.

Gate 79, King Fahd Gate is one of the main entrances with direct access towards the Mataf.

And the beauty is in the approach.

Even before you reach the grand entrance, the Ka’bah comes into view.

Then, as you walk through, you keep walking towards the House of Allah with your eyes fixed on it.

You can feel getting closer to the House of Allah with every step you take.

The next time you drink Zamzam, pause for a moment.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Ibn Majah 3062)

A reminder that this blessed water is an opportunity to turn to Allah with what is in your heart.

Make your du’a.

Ask Allah for what you need, and ask Him with hope.

Sometimes, all we need is a moment to stop, ask, and trust that Allah hears us.

May Allah accept our du’as and grant us what is best. Ameen.
