From Monday 11 May, weโ€™ll be working to replace and realign footways and kerbs in preparation for the new, wider section of Botley Road reopening in August.

This work is due to be carried out in stages, to minimise disruption as much as possible, from Monday until mid-June.

This work involves:

โ€ข Temporarily removing, then realigning and replacing footpaths
โ€ข Realigning and installing kerbs
โ€ข Laying ducting for street lighting
โ€ข Removing some of the existing footway tarmac
โ€ข Retarmacking and laying paving stones

Work will take place on footways and kerbs in the following areas:

โ€ข Botley Road between Mill Street and Osney Bridge
โ€ข The junctions of Botley Road with Abbey Road, Cripley Road and Mill Street

To allow this work to take place safely:

โ€ข Sections of footpath will be closed off temporarily, with an alternative route on the other side of the road.
โ€ข Marshals will be on hand to support and to provide continued access to properties.
โ€ข Traffic management will be in place, with one half of each section of road coned off in stages.
โ€ข There will be some temporary changes to walking routes, crossing points, bike waiting areas at traffic lights, and points where cyclists will need to dismount. These will be signposted and marshals will be on hand to support.

Next week (beginning 11 May) we will be replacing footways and kerbs on the southern side of Botley Road, between the River Hotel and Pack and Send, and at the junction of Botley Road and Mill Street. This work will take place during the daytime in the area shown in the image below.

The footway and one side of the road will be closed, with access maintained for residents and businesses.

The walking route will be on the other side of Botley Road and Mill Street.

The new Botley Road rail bridge will be 4.4 m high, which is 0.4 metres higher than the old bridge and is suitable for the vast majority of vehicles on the road, including standard height lorries, which are generally under 4.42 m.

Vehicles that are over 4.4 m high make up 0.1% of vehicles on the road, are professionally operated and legally obliged to use signed routes and height aware navigation.

Increasing the height clearance any further than 4.4 metres would have required steep gradients (over 10%) on either side of the bridge. This would affect road users including cyclists, buses and HGVs. It would also have presented further drainage and water management challenges, and increased costs.

We held our latest resident information session on Wednesday (22 April) at the West Oxford Community Centre.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Giving updates were representatives from Network Rail, Kier, and Thames Water.

We ran through the latest project progress and upcoming work, as well as looking ahead to the reopening of Botley Road in August:

โ€ข New collision protection beams have been installed on the eastern bridge span.
โ€ข Upcoming works include waterproofing on a new ground water flood defence concrete structure, and excavation for the flood defence tank.
โ€ข To prepare for the road reopening, work will be taking place around the junctions of Botley Road with Abbey Road, Cripley Road and Mill Street in May and June. Weโ€™ll share further details about this work soon.

Slides from the session can be found here: https://www.networkrail.co.uk/our-work/our-routes/western/oxfordshire/

The next resident session will take place at 5-6pm on 20 May. Please note the change of location for the May meeting only:

๐Ÿ“The Community Works, 21 Park End St, Oxford OX1 1HU.

After this, our monthly meetings will be back at West Oxford Community Centre from June โ€“ August.

Utility diversion works on Roger Dudman Way were successfully completed earlier this month. This will allow for a drainage system to be built under the new rail bridge.

Work also continues installing new drainage and flood prevention measures under the lowered road and building a retaining wall to support a future track to the new platform 5.

This weekend, we will be installing new collision protection beams on the eastern side of the bridge.

The beams need to be lifted over the walkway that runs between Frideswide Square and Botley Road. This will take place overnight on Saturday 18 April to Sunday 19 April. This work can only take place at night when trains are not running, because it is close to the railway tracks.

Marshals will be on site to keep everyone safe during this overnight work, which will occasionally require people to pause briefly at either end of the walkway while the beams are lifted.

We have two cranes arriving on site. One 650-tonne crane to lift in the collision protection beams on the east, and a 80-tonne crane which will be used for the drainage system works on the west.

With the new Botley Road rail bridge in place, we are now moving into the next critical phase of the project: rebuilding the road itself.

Our teams are working towards the August 2026 reopening, and here is what you will see happening on-site in the coming months:

๐Ÿšง Rebuilding the Highway: We are starting the full reconstruction of Botley Road, including new surfacing, kerbs, modern lighting, and clear signage.

๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿšถ A Staggered Reopening for Walkways: We are constructing dedicated new routes for cyclists and pedestrians. The southern walkway is set to be fully completed and open in Summer 2026. Once this is open, the current northern walkway will temporarily close for its own final stage of works, which will continue through the autumn

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Future-Proofing our Infrastructure: Work is underway on the east bridge to transform it into a new pedestrian link between the station and Becket Street car park, set to open in Summer 2026. This bridge is also "future-proofed" to carry additional tracks for future station developments.

๐Ÿ’ง Advanced Flood Protection: To protect the area for the long term, we are installing a massive ground-water flood defence. This involves a 120-metre-long reinforced concrete structure, using approximately 1,250 cubic metres of concrete to keep the lowered road surface dry.

๐Ÿš† Expanding the Station: We are completing the retaining wall and landscaping to the west of the tracks. This creates the footprint for a new track leading to the future Platform 5.

To ensure we stay fully focused on getting the road open in August, other station construction works have been temporarily paused. We expect to onboard a contractor for those remaining station upgrades in early 2027.

From Monday 30 March to Thursday 2 April, a short temporary diversion will be in place on the pedestrian walkway near the junction of Roger Dudman Way and Cripley Road.

๐—ช๐—ต๐˜†?
We need to excavate a section of the walkway to relocate water services. This is essential to allow installation of the new surfaceโ€‘water drainage system and attenuation tank.

The route will be clearly signposted, with marshals on hand to help.
