Happy Birthday, Sir John Betjeman 🎉

Today we remember Sir John Betjeman (1906–1984), the poet, writer, broadcaster and passionate champion of Britain’s architectural heritage.

Alongside other advocates, Betjeman played a leading role in the campaign to save St. Pancras and the Midland Grand Hotel from demolition in the 1960s. At a time when the future of the Victorian landmark was uncertain, he recognised its architectural and cultural importance and campaigned passionately for its preservation.

His role is celebrated on the Grand Terrace, where a bronze sculpture by Martin Jennings, unveiled in 2007, depicts Betjeman looking up at William Henry Barlow’s iconic trainshed roof. The accompanying Cumbrian slate inscription describes him as the poet “who saved this glorious station”, alongside lines from his poem Cornish Cliffs.

More than 150 years after St. Pancras first opened, Betjeman’s influence remains a reminder of the importance of protecting the places that connect us to our history.

Next time you pass through the station, take a moment to appreciate the architecture he helped preserve and the poetry that shaped his love for it.
