Last week I spent 90 minutes in one of Alaska’s three lounges at Seattle Tacoma airport ahead of my flight home, returning after a couple of nights in Seattle to review the airline’s inaugural flight from London on 22nd May.

Alaska Airlines is rapidly transforming from an regional airline into a global one. 94 years after its founding, it has begun flying from Seattle to Europe and Asia, turning its home base into a globally connected hub.

The transition is enabled by regional growth, fuelled by the acquisition of Virgin America in 2014 and Hawaiian Airlines in 2024. Whilst the Hawaiian Airlines brand continues for flights to the pacific island, the airline also gave Alaska Airlines a fleet of Boeing 787 widebodies, all of which it is now re-allocating to its Seattle hub. (Hawaiian will retain A330s for its continental US flying.)

Alaska Airlines has yet to open an international lounge in Seattle, so I got to check out the domestic lounges it is currently using during my recent flight.

Two new Avios-only flights are launching THIS AFTERNOON (Wednesday) for October half-term.

We had already predicted one of these, because an eagle-eyed reader had seen a flight missing from the schedule when he tried to book his own holiday flights late last year!

The two routes are Tenerife and Reykjavik.
