📢 April Trade & Customs Update by BR.IT Customs
This month has seen a wave of regulatory changes and global trade developments. Here are the key highlights our team is tracking:
🌍 US Tariffs Introduced
A blanket 10% tariff on all US imports took effect on 5 April, with more to follow. UK businesses are encouraged to provide feedback to help shape the government’s response.
📦 Air Freight Sector Under Pressure
Cargo demand is dipping, and the possible removal of the US de minimis threshold could increase costs and delays—especially for e-commerce.
🛃 Short Shipment Declarations Rejected
HMRC is cracking down on short shipments: C21 codes 91U and 96M are now rejected. A full customs declaration is required, and import VAT handling may impact cash flow.
🌿 Import Controls Strengthened
APHA now leads import checks at Sevington BCP, with new driver advisories and restrictions on goods from FMD-risk countries. Accurate data and coordination between CDS and IPAFFS are essential.
🚫 Export Control Enforcement Ramps Up
£3.7M in compound settlements issued for breaches of military export controls. Exporters must ensure licensing compliance to avoid enforcement action.

Download our practical guide for importers, exporters, and logistics professionals to better manage compliance, communication, and audits.
📅 Key Dates to Watch
• 9 April – Additional US tariffs
• 17–19 June – Multimodal 2025, NEC Birmingham
• Ongoing – Import rule updates from APHA
