What A Driver Sees | The Best Spots for Enjoying the Sunshine in London Hotels ☀️
Episode 7 | The Garden Terrace
The Hari, Belgravia

Hidden away inside The Hari, The Garden Terrace is a lovely little sun-trap in Belgravia. It is not about big skyline views or a loud rooftop atmosphere. This one is more intimate, and ideal when you want the sunshine somewhere calm, pretty and tucked away.

The Setting
The terrace has living ivy walls, flowers, heaters and a retractable roof, so it feels like a proper all-weather London escape. On warm days it opens up beautifully, but it still has that cosy hotel feeling if the weather changes. Think elegant aperitivos, long lunches and cocktails under the sun or stars.

What to Order
The food is easy, social and good for sharing. Expect cicchetti and hotel classics, including Tiger Prawns, Straciatella Crostini, Calamari, The Hari Club, Montanara Pizza and Truffle Fries to name just a few. There are also desserts including Caprese Al Limone and Tiramisu.

For drinks, this huge menu draws on defining modern art movements, from the
honesty of Realism to the boldness of Pop Art, each cocktail translating
artistic expression into flavour, aroma, texture, and presentation. For example, the Expressionist (from 'The Scream' painting), is a selection of whiskeys with apricot and chocolate to represent the bold colours and distorted forms. Most of the cocktails have a zero version, too and they also have their own 'Haritini' Collection. Aperitivo Hour runs weekdays from 5pm to 7pm - order a cocktail and enjoy a complimentary Cicchetti plate, which makes it a fabulous golden hour choice.

Who It’s Good For
Quiet catch-ups, casual dates, pre-dinner drinks, small birthdays, Belgravia lunches or anyone who wants somewhere outside without feeling too exposed. It is also a good one when you want the feeling of a private members’ terrace without the fuss.

Good to Know
Food is listed as available from 12pm, with orders until 10pm, but the bar is open all day until late.

For a pretty hidden terrace, relaxed service and a peaceful pocket of Belgravia sunshine, The Hari is a very elegant summer pick.

Special Delivery: 33 Years
Episode 4b: The Longest Partnership

DARCY: Your turn now...
JAINE: I'm all yours.
DARCY: Over such a long relationship, IMG's business must have changed. How have you adapted alongside them?

JAINE: Indeed it has – it is no longer in the same family and has been bought out a few times. Their focus has changed but they still rely on us to guide them through a logistics world which has changed dramatically. IMG was the first customer that we placed terminal’s inside to hook up by modem to our system. We had these little green WYSE screens and secure modems (the ones that make all the noise), and they could book directly on them. As time has moved on, the cloud became a more convenient way to make bookings. It all beats hand written airway bills, which is where it started!

DARCY: Showing your age...has the relationship ever been tested?

JAINE: Rude! It has been tested, but generally we have long lasting relations with key staff, and although IMG has low turnover, they do eventually go! The challenge is then ensuring new staff understand how valuable we are. Starting from a blank canvas rather than with a myriad of rescues performed for predecessors that new staff aren't aware of!

DARCY: What do you think has made them continue to chose you?

JAINE: We genuinely care about all our clients, but it is fair to say that we have a very special relationship with IMG. It has become perhaps a matter of principal to keep the relationship going, as it feels like we grew together. But in the modern era, we continue to make things as easy as possible for all our customers, and keep ahead of the curve.

DARCY: That's very sweet.
JAINE: I can be sometimes!
DARCY: Finally, what has this partnership taught you about building relationships that last?

JAINE: Patience, and dealing with problems head on. We are in a business that is subject to delays and problems over which you have no control. Dealing with them quickly and keeping lines of communication open is what makes you stand out and your business relationships last.

DARCY: I won't leave it this long next time.
JAINE: Good, I'm quite liking being interviewed now!

Special Delivery: 33 Years
Episode 4a: The Longest Partnership
DARCY: After a long hiatus, we’re talking about your longest-standing client relationship, can you name them?

DARREN: I'll take the first half of questions...Loudly and proudly, without a doubt it is IMG (International Management Group), the sports marketing, promotion and TV empire founded by Mark McCormack in 1960 who basically invented the idea that companies could sponsor sports stars.

DARCY: I don't know many people that don't know IMG. How long have you worked with them, and how did the relationship first begin?

DARREN: We haven’t quite worked them since their inception, but for more than 35 years! Jaine walked into the postroom in Strand on the Green in Chiswick, and basically charmed the post-room manager, George, with her stunning repertoire. He had called the office to make a booking before she got back there! The rest is history...

DARCY: I always knew she was the beauty AND the brains...
DARREN: Me Too.
DARCY: What was Air Courier International like when they first became a client?

We were definitely smaller, but our ethos was the same, and it tied in with IMG’s, 'customer is king' mantra. We had no internet, used word processors, telex and fax machines. There were no mobile phones and we communicated with drivers over 2 way radios. I really miss the radios!

DARCY: Simpler times...I assume. Was there a particular job or moment when you realised they genuinely trusted you?

DARREN: Yes yes you're a spring chicken, we know. It was a series of moments – when they got us involved in Wimbledon in 1996 and placed us in the actual merchandise shop under number 1 court (IMG used to handle the shop for Wimbledon) feels like a pretty defining moment though.

DARCY: You're providing more detailed answers than I was expecting so we'll have to carry on this episode next week.
DARREN: I'm glad you have such high expectations of me !

What A Driver Sees | The Best Spots for Enjoying the Sunshine in London Hotels ☀️
Episode 6 | The Nest
Treehouse Hotel London, Marylebone

If you like your sunshine with skyline views, The Nest at Treehouse Hotel London is a strong one. Set high above Langham Place, it gives you one of the best rooftop perches in the area, with 360-degree views across London and a relaxed, greenery-filled feel.

The Setting
This is exactly as the hotel describes; an urban treehouse. Plants, warm lighting, natural textures, open-air seating and views are particularly impressive at sunset. It's playful but still refined, and the height gives it that instant 'special occasion' feeling.

What to Order
The Nest is mainly about drinks, views and bar bites. Expect cocktails, wine, beer and casual food designed for grazing rather than a formal sit-down meal. The atmosphere shifts nicely through the day, from sunny afternoon drinks into a more lively evening spot, with DJs from Thursday to Saturday evenings. Their picks include elevated hot dogs, mini tartar tacos, croquettes and sharing boards amongst much more.

This summer, they are hosting a pop-up celebrating the best of British, pairing Silverhand Estate sparkling wines with bite size versions of classic english dishes, such as fish and chips and Eton mess.

Who It’s Good For
Sunset drinks, casual dates, birthdays, groups of friends, visitors staying near Oxford Circus, or anyone who wants rooftop views without heading over to the City. It's great for those with dogs (on Sundays), where your pup can accompany you and be treated to a special dog friendly menu. If you decide you want a sit down meal, head to Madera within the hotel, where they serve reimagined Mexican flavours.

This is the kind of place where one drink can easily turn into a few, especially if you manage to get a good spot outside.

Good to Know
The Nest is currently open 12 noon to 1am, and Sunday from 12 noon to 11pm.

For rooftop sunshine, greenery and wide London views, The Nest is a proper hidden-in-plain-sight spot.

What A Driver Sees | The Best Spots for Enjoying the Sunshine in London Hotels ☀️

Episode 5 | Ham Yard Courtyard
Ham Yard Hotel, Soho

Hidden just off the busy streets of Soho, Ham Yard Courtyard is a private haven in the middle of London. You are moments from Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street and the West End, but once you are sitting beneath the oak trees with a drink in hand, central London feels a far away. The hotel describes the courtyard as a place for al fresco dining on warm summer days.

The Setting
This is sunshine with a bit of Soho personality. It has the polish of a Firmdale hotel, but the courtyard keeps it relaxed and sociable. Tables outside, trees overhead and art-filled interiors just behind you. The atmosphere is lively but not chaotic. There is also 'Rose on the Roof' between the 6th and 29th of August; set on the Mediterranean style terrace.

What to Order
The menu is modern British and European, built around seasonal dishes. In the courtyard, they highlight plates like grilled south coast octopus with romesco, charred peppers and basil, alongside signature Liquid Art cocktails. There is also an Oyster Cart running Wednesday to Sunday, with half price oysters from 5pm to 6pm during Golden Hour.
On the Roof, the menu includes sharing dishes including meats and cheeses, alongside small plates and flatbreads. The wine list, which includes sparkling, has a huge range of choice, and you can also opt for the wine flight if you can't decide. They have also created a cocktail list incorporating rose into each.

Who It’s Good For
Afterwork drinks, pre-theatre plans, a relaxed lunch, dates, friends visiting London, or anyone who wants to sit outside in Soho without feeling like they are on the pavement. It is also a great shout if you want something central, but still tucked away.

Good to Know
The restaurant is currently open from 7am and the bar from 8am. Outdoor dining can be booked, but drinks are walk-in only. They also have heaters on the terrace, although afternoon tea is not served outside.

For courtyard sunshine, Soho energy and polished hotel service, Ham Yard is a very easy summer pick.
