Boscastles boiler tube sponsorship appeal continues to make progress with more flue tubes and superheater flue tubes being sponsored.

Many thanks to all our supporters.

For information on how you can help sponsor a tube (big or small) go to www.Boscastleloco.co.uk and click on on the DONATE button and then select SPONSOR A BOILER TUBE

All donors can pick their own number (of those available) will receive a certificate acknowledging their support and have their name displayed on our board.

Our SuperHeater manifold bolt fund is also progressing well from donations received during our shed tours and we are getting close to the total of £2000. The new bolts and refurbished existing bolts will be held in store awaiting the completion of repairs to the boiler.

Boscastles volunteers have continued to work on the tender brake system and preparing the parts for reassembly.

Recent guided tour visitors to the GCR shed at Loughborough on 1st & 2nd August could see the work in progress.

We have also had good news on the stolen parts front in that we have had the insurance claim resolved and will be able to cover most of our costs of replacing all the items taken four years ago.

This will allow us to concentrate on finishing the fund raising for the boiler rebuild and get the boiler repairs underway.

Boscastle will again be available to view at the next gala event at the GCR on 5th & 6th September during the Diesel gala where we will be providing guided shed tours.

Work is progressing well on the machining of the centre cylinder motion parts as can be seen from these photos from the Daniela Works at Shildon.

Getting the best of the steel out of the heart of the forgings does entail a large amount of material removal as can be seen from the large bin of swarf, but the end result will be worth it from a strength and fatigue life point of view.

Parts will be machined close to size then heat treated to stress relieve and ensure dimensional stability before final machining.

Further work on the centre valve mechanism parts has been going on at the Daniela Works in Shildon.

The boiler at Quorn has also recently had a visit from our potential boiler repairers and a detailed inspection carried out to assess what further work is required to complete the firebox. All done out in the open in the middle of a heatwave!

Meanwhile in the shed the volunteers have been working on the boiler cladding and tender brake mechanism. The arm has been welded back on to the shaft and the tender pins have been painted, ready to refit.
Some pipe flanges have also been laser cut ready for adding on to the new pipes when they are formed to suit (centre hole to be added when dimensions are known).

Finally the loco shed at GCR Loughborough will be open for tours this weekend (11th/12th July) as part of the GCR Reunification “Bridge The Gap” weekend, so if you are there come and say hello to Boscastle.

The new motion parts are progressing well at Daniela Works Ltd as initial machining has been undertaken.

The bulk material has been found to be tough on cutting tools as the parts are roughed out of the forgings before being heat treated and then further machining takes place.

Latest news on the replacement centre motion parts.
The forgings have arrived at the works in Shildon and they have started to unload them and work on them, first cutting the forgings to rough size before loading them on to the CNC milling machines to for shape finishing. A heat treatment then normalises the material before finish cut, nitriding and finish ground to size.
So quite a bit of work to come!

The images of the parts on the CNC bed are ones being machined for another locomotive but are similar in size and shape to the ones that will be produced for Boscastle.

The replacement centre section cylinder/valve motion forgings have now been heat treated and are being prepared for shipment to the UK for machining.

We have also been offered for sale some castings from another Bulleid Pacific owning group 34007 Wadebridge at the Mid Hants Railway that will allow new flanges to be machined for the two 2.75” dia tender to engine water pipe connections to be made.

Boscastle will be on display again this weekend 18th/19th April and the volunteers will be conducting shed tours from 10am to 4pm on both days at the GCR in Loughborough.
