With 24% of fatal or serious injury collisions in Britain involving 17 to 24-year-olds, Norfolk Police are supporting a national campaign working to highlight the risk to young drivers and how they can help prevent lives being lost.

The most common risk factors affecting young drivers are:
• Carrying passengers - The presence of peer-aged passengers can lead to distraction and pressure to drive dangerously.
• Driving at night - Crash risk is significantly higher at night due to reduced visibility and increased likelihood of fatigue or risk-taking behaviour.
• Risky behaviour - Young drivers, particularly males, may engage in risky behaviours such as speeding or overtaking unsafely.

Chief Inspector Vicky McParland, of the joint Roads and Armed Policing Team said: “We know how exciting getting your driving licence and that first taste of freedom can be. It does however come with responsibility. Pressure from your mates and a lack of experience on the roads can mean you make some risky decisions behind the wheel. It is important that you respect the road and understand just how fragile life can be. Make sure you make it home safe.”
