First Light Festival returns to Lowestoft’s sandy South Beach 18-19 June, with a free 24-hour programme of music, performance, arts, activities and experiences! As the only beach-based festival around, First Light celebrates one full cycle of the midsummer sun in Britain’s most easterly town, with non-stop action across the weekend.

This year’s festival has something for everyone, with a hugely eclectic line up that features pioneers of drum & bass, scientists at the forefront of climate change, and hands-on activities for little artists of the future.

To all my adoring fans…….. You know who you are…. Both of you.

The day is finally dawning when you need to set your video recorders to Wednesday 29 September at 4:30pm on BBC1 to catch a particularly enthralling episode of “Antiques Road Trip” where, I understand there will be an incredibly well produced and presented segment on “The Bloater” courtesy of Waveney Valley Smokehouse. I assume the segment will last for about 15 seconds which will be my claim to fame for the next 15 years. In the program a local expert (modesty prevents me from naming the individual concerned) will talk endlessly (but enthusiastically) about smoking fish in Lowestoft…. Unless they cut that bit out…

I am led to believe that signed photographs of the person will be available by special request….

Programme details.

After a couple of years of discussions, audits, and taste trials we have been offered a stand at London's Borough Market, which we are excited about, however, we will need to staff it so we are looking for keen, London based foodies that might be interested in working a few days a week at the UK's oldest Food Market - Please share if you know of anyone who may fancy the opportunity to work with quality artisan products. Thank You..

So there was this smokehouse

After 30 years in the scientific and medical software industry and a couple of years in the restaurant business, my wife and I decided to retire. While out for a coastal walk in Lowestoft one day we came upon a 150 year old smokehouse all locked up and looking forlorn. It was 200 yards from Ness Point which is the farthest east you can get in the UK without getting your feet wet. The North Sea blasted the promenade and the wind whipped it into a frenzy but the smokehouse stood in defiance as it had for decades. No No No.. my wife said sternly as I called the telephone number, a few weeks later we took possession and embarked on a journey of tradition and discovery, and very hard work...
