Olie Myburgh, is a passionate aviation photographer here at Lydd Airport ✈️.

With a love for aviation that started in his childhood, Olie has honed his skills for capturing breathtaking images of aircraft - especially military helicopters.

His journey began with airport visits and airbase explorations, and his time in the air cadets only deepened his passion. Timing and technique are key in aviation photography; it’s all about being in the right place at the right time and using natural light to your advantage.

Olie has a special knack for photographing military helicopters, leading to unique opportunities to capture these incredible machines in action. One of his standout experiences involved a sunny day spent photographing Chinook helicopters during training-a moment that truly embodies the excitement of aviation photography.

For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Olie has some great advice: “Put in the time and get out there! There's a wealth of information, so do your research and connect with the community.”

✈️ Congratulations to Ernie!

We’re delighted to share that Oliver (Ernie) Dowle has successfully passed his Air Traffic Control exam.

We are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Ernie Dowle, one of our talented Student Air Traffic Controllers at Lydd Airport! 🚦✈️

Ernie's passion for aviation blossomed during his teenage years, and his dream of becoming an air traffic controller is now closer than ever, thanks in large part to the support and mentorship he has received from our incredible team at Lydd Airport. Recognising Ernie's unique skills and dedication, we have partnered with him on his journey through training at Global ATS, providing him with the resources and guidance to help him excel.

Airport Operations✈️

Every month we are host to a wide array of aircraft, and a substantial amount of our traffic can be found taking part in training.

Our training traffic varies from Rotary 🚁 and Fixed Wing ✈️ Private Pilot Licenses, all the way to military aircraft involving Lydd within their training.

However Lydd Airport is an airport used for training by multiple Government and Emergency Service organisations every month.

HM Coastguard has one of its ten search and rescue bases with us.

With their aircraft based out of Redhill Aerodrome and a Headquarters at Rochester, Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex can occasionally be found at Lydd making use of our Instrument Approach Systems.

Much like the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, we are often found to be a training location for National Police Air Service HQ who also use our Instrument Training Systems available whilst conducting training.

This activity at Lydd Airport is yet another thing that makes us a unique aerodrome, and we are proud to be a help to these vitally important services to the safety of many people daily.

✈️Airport Operations✈️

Did you know that as well as a large General Aviation populous, Lydd Airport is also frequently a destination for Private Charter and Business flights?

We see a variety of different sized jets fly in and out of our aerodrome with a wide array of passengers, sometimes even including 4 legged friends!

🛩 What's Happening at Lydd 🛩

Last month the airport saw a variety of different traffic as the weather improved, and what a great sight it was!

We were fortunate enough to have the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex commence some of their training at Lydd in their AgustaWestland AW169.

The crew landed at Lydd before setting back off to finish their training out across the counties, however this gave us enough time to talk to the friendly crew, and even got some pictures!
