Perfect conditions for some own boat tuition, with a gentle breeze building into the afternoon:

- planned a trip taking tides and forecast into account
- prepared the boat
- sailed the passage plan to Newtown Creek
- used key features to plan our approach to the harbour
- dropped the anchor
- saw a lovely seal 🩭
- left the harbour and executed the return passage plan

Just one of the challenges that comes with training at a very tidal location
 lack of water!

But with challenges comes learning, so I still think it’s one of the best training locations in the world đŸ‘đŸ»

This made my day

“A superb and very up-to-date guide to Solent harbours
We have already made good use of the information on recent trips.”

Reading comments like this reminds me exactly why I wrote Solent Harbours - to help people enjoy exploring this amazing coastline with confidence.

Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported the book so far. Your feedback means more than you know.

If the guide has helped you discover a new harbour, find a great anchorage, or has simply made passage planning easier, I’d love to hear what you think in an Amazon review.

Fantastic to see Waterstones Lymington stocking Solent Harbours! Doing Waterstones proud and bringing in new books, by local authors, which are relevant to local ways of life. đŸ“šâ›”

It’s wonderful to see the book on the shelves of such a great local bookshop, right here in the heart of Lymington. If you’ve been thinking about exploring the harbours of the Solent, whether by boat or you simply love our local coastline, I hope Solent Harbours inspires your next adventure.

If you’re in the area, do pop into Waterstones Lymington and have a browse. Thank you to everyone who’s supported the book so far - it really does mean a great deal.

Need a new perspective on the Solent? ‘Solent Harbours’ has stunning aerial photography to use in conjunction with beautifully detailed chartlets, to give you a better idea of where to go, or what to avoid!

Pictured here is the iconic Needles Lighthouse and Rocks, and Scratchell’s Bay, showing St Anthony Rock awash. That’s one to avoid.

How well do you know the River Medina?

The Medina, starting at Cowes and stretching south to Newport is a glorious stretch, punctuated by opportunities to stop and explore. From Cowes to East Cowes, from The Folly to Island Harbour and Newport, there’s something for everyone! 🐼

There is a large section to help navigate the river and each mooring spot along the Medina in Solent Harbours, by Tim Stickley, available on Amazon. 📖

Do you know what these ‘day shapes’ mean?

The ball shape shows a vessel at anchor. Very useful to determine this from a distance. Vessels showing this should be commended for their seamanship; especially powerboats that find it more challenging to find a place to display it.

The inverted cone shape shows a vessel motorsailing. Useful to be able to determine their expected speed better, and define their status for COLREGS purposes. The vessel is considered a motor vessel for the purposes of collision avoidance. This shape is seldom used however, and is often known as the ‘RYA Examiner Onboard’ shape!

RYA First Aid course last week! All about ‘making people better’!

An excellent course, delivered by a fantastic instructor. It covers all the first aid aspects usually covered in a one-day course, but considers all situations from a maritime perspective.

We can deliver bespoke courses if the date you were hoping for isn’t on our website.
