How long does an overhead crane last? 🏗️

Job Title: Lifting Equipment Engineer (Overhead Crane Specialist)

Location: Mansfield and surrounding areas (Field Based)

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 base DOE (OTE £50,000+ with overtime and call-outs)

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Lifting Equipment Engineer with specialised experience in overhead gantry cranes to join our expanding field service team.

In this role, you will be the face of our company, delivering high-quality maintenance, statutory inspections, and emergency repair services to a diverse portfolio of industrial clients.

If you are a self-motivated engineer who prides themselves on safety, technical precision, and solving complex mechanical and electrical problems, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct statutory examinations, testing, and certification of overhead cranes and lifting gear in strict accordance with LOLER and PUWER regulations.

- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex electrical and mechanical faults on various crane types, hoists, and lifting attachments.

- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to minimise client downtime.

- Assist with the installation, commissioning, and modernisation of new lifting systems.

- Complete detailed digital inspection reports and safety certificates accurately and promptly.

- Participate in a rotating on-call breakdown rota to support our key clients.

What We Are Looking For:

- A time-served apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

- Proven hands-on experience working specifically on overhead gantry cranes, jib cranes, and wire rope hoists.

- Strong electrical fault-finding skills, including the ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams.

- LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) qualifications are highly desirable.

- Comfortable working at heights and in heavy industrial environments.

- Full UK Driving Licence (essential).

A Closer Look at Our Latest 10 Tonne Crane 🎦

A quick look at the new overhead crane we supplied and installed for SDC Trailers in Mansfield, travelling along the existing gantry.

The 10 tonne single girder crane is fitted with two 5 tonne hoists, which can be operated independently or together for tandem lifting.

The crane has a 9.5m lifting height and is operated by remote control. It was installed onto the customer's existing gantry steelwork and connected to their existing power feed system.

This short video was taken during testing to show the crane travelling smoothly along the gantry. 🟡

10T Single Girder Electric Overhead Travelling Crane Installation 🟡

From Workshop to Site – 10T Single Girder EOT Gantry Crane

We recently supplied and installed a 10 tonne single girder electric overhead travelling crane for SDC Trailers Ltd in Mansfield. The crane has a 20m span, a 9.5m lifting height and is fitted with 2 x 5 tonne hoists with tandem lifting capability.

The two 5 tonne hoists can be operated independently or together, allowing operators to lift loads of up to 10 tonnes when tandem lifting is required. The crane is operated by remote control, giving the operator greater flexibility when positioning loads.

The crane was installed onto the customer's existing gantry steelwork and connected to their existing power feed system, making use of the infrastructure already on site.

A nice project to go into the weekend with- just a shame the weather didn't come out to play for the pictures! ☁️

Understanding your Crane's Safe Working Load (SWL) is essential, but there's more to selecting the right crane than simply knowing how much it can lift.

How frequently is it used? How heavily is it loaded? What demands are being placed throughout the crane's lifespan?

That's where duty classification comes in.

A crane lifting its maximum load occasionally has very different demands placed on it compared with one lifting heavy loads continuously throughout the working day.

The crane and its components need to be suitable for the work they're expected to perform.

This 2T Safe Working Load overhead travelling crane has a 7m span, 14m gantry and 4m lifting height, providing reliable lifting capacity across the customer’s workshop.
