A plaque has been unveiled to commemorate Professor Tony Ridley, the man who helped to make the Tyne and Wear Metro system a reality.

Prof Ridley, who was originally from Sunderland, was the main driver of the Metro project in its early years, and without his leadership it may never have come to fruition.

He died in March, aged 92.

The plaque was unveiled at a ceremony at Central Metro station in Newcastle today, Friday 16 October, which was attended by members of his family, including his wife Jane.

Pictured below is Prof Ridley's wife, daughter and his grandchildren.

Metro improvement works are coming to the Yellow Line

From Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, we'll be carrying out essential track renewals, overhead line replacement and other improvement works to help keep Metro running safely and reliably.

No trains will run between St James and Monkseaton in either direction during this time.

Replacement bus service 900 will operate, calling at or near all affected stations. Metro tickets and passes will be accepted on board.

Journeys may take a little longer, so please allow extra time and plan ahead.

Trains will resume between St James and Monkseaton on Monday 2 November.
