Here’s one to start the weekend…

Did you know that ants can lift around 50 times their own body weight? 🐜

If us humans could do the same, the average person would apparently be able to lift around 4,000kg. Now that’s getting pretty close to the empty weight of one of our smaller removal trucks!

It would certainly make moving house a lot easier… although I think we’ll stick with the trucks and our team for now!

When it comes to packing your own boxes, there is a good rule of thumb to remember. Our boxes are labelled with a maximum weight of 20kg, so if you can’t comfortably lift it, don’t fill it. Heavy boxes aren’t just difficult to carry, they can also make moving and handling them much harder and less safe.

And if you’re not sure how best to pack something, just ask us. After 107 years of moving homes and businesses, we’ve picked up a few tricks along the way!

There’s a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses for over 107 years and four generations.

Happy Friday! ☀️🍦

With the warm weather we’ve been enjoying, there’s every chance you’ve heard the familiar tune of the ice cream van this week. But here’s a fact you might not know…

Before she became Prime Minister, Margaret Roberts (later Margaret Thatcher) worked as a research chemist at J. Lyons & Co., helping to develop emulsifiers used in ice cream.

Before the 1950s, ice cream vans carried pre-made ice cream that had been produced at the factory. Advances in food science, including Margaret Roberts’ work on emulsifiers and introducing air into the mixture, helped make soft-serve ice cream possible. That meant ice cream vans could freshly whip up a Mr Whippy on the spot! Something many of us still enjoy today.

So, the next time you hear the ice cream van coming down the road, you can thank a certain Prime Minister for helping make your 99 Flake that little bit lighter and creamier!

Talking of warm weather, keeping cool is just as important on moving day. A cold drink or a glass of water is always appreciated by our team when they’re working hard, especially on days like these. A little refreshment goes a long way and helps keep everyone moving safely.

There is a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses across Yorkshire for over 107 years and four generations.

Happy Friday! ☀️

With the summer holidays just around the corner, plenty of us will be jetting off somewhere warmer for a well-earned break. Whether it’s Europe, the Canaries or somewhere a little further afield, it’s always interesting to know a bit about the places we visit.

Take Tenerife, for example. Most people know it’s part of Spain, but did you know it’s actually around 700 miles closer to the Equator than it is to mainland Spain?

The island has quite a history too. It was here that Admiral Lord Nelson lost his arm during the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797, the only major battle he ever lost. Then, many years later, Tenerife played another significant role in history as the place where General Franco launched the Spanish Civil War.

Talking of holidays, here’s a little moving tip. If you’re buying or selling a home, don’t forget to tell your solicitor if you’ve got a holiday booked. Keeping everyone informed of dates can help avoid unnecessary delays and make planning your move much easier.

A little communication goes a long way.

There is a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses across Yorkshire for over 107 years and four generations.

Here's one for you...

Did you know Yorkshire is home to more than 650 castles, abbeys and historic monuments? From the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey to the mighty Richmond Castle and the iconic Whitby Abbey, there's history tucked away in every corner of the county.

Some of those buildings have been standing for hundreds of years, proving that if something is built properly, it'll stand the test of time.

It's a bit like a good house move. The key isn't rushing it; it's all in the planning, the preparation and having the right people doing the job. That's what helps everything go smoothly on the day.

We've been helping families and businesses move across Yorkshire for over 107 years, and while we've moved plenty of antiques over the years, thankfully we've never been asked to move a castle!

If you're planning a move and would like some friendly advice, we're only a phone call away.

Happy sunny Friday! ☀️

We’ve all heard of the Tyne Tunnel, the Dartford Tunnel, and of course the Channel Tunnel… but have you ever wondered which tunnel is actually the longest?

You have to travel across the Atlantic to find it. The Delaware Aqueduct in the USA stretches an incredible 85 miles, carrying water from the Rondout Reservoir all the way to New York.

But we don’t have to go that far to find an engineering marvel. Right here in the UK, the Haweswater Aqueduct runs for 96 miles from the Lake District to Manchester. Built between 1890 and 1925, it’s a remarkable piece of Victorian engineering, delivering over 220 million litres of drinking water every day, around 11% of the North West’s water supply.

Even more impressive, the journey takes around 36 hours, all powered by gravity. In fact, it’s the longest gravity-fed aqueduct in the world, and if all of its tunnel sections were joined together, it would be the longest tunnel anywhere.

Talking of water… with the temperatures we’ve been enjoying recently, keeping hydrated is just as important on moving day. Our team are always grateful for a glass of cold water when working hard, especially on a warm day. It keeps everyone refreshed, safe and ready to keep your move running smoothly.

There is a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses across North Yorkshire for over 107 years and four generations.

Random Fact Friday! 🌎⏰

Did you know that every 100 years the moon’s gravitational pull slows the Earth’s rotation by just enough to add around 1.4 milliseconds to our day?

Sounds tiny, doesn’t it? But like everything, those little bits of time all add up.

In fact, when dinosaurs were wandering around, a day was only around 23 hours long! 🦕

Now, when it comes to moving home, we know that time is everything. 🔑

There’s the time your keys are released, the time needed to carefully load the lorry, the time our teams have to get everything packed and protected, the driving time, the all-important brew break ☕, the unloading, and finally… the moment you can put your feet up and enjoy your new home.

At Archers, we take the time to explain every stage of your move, from the initial home visit right through to the moment our team waves goodbye.

Because after over 107 years of moving homes and businesses, we know that a successful move isn’t just about getting from A to B, it’s about getting everything right along the way.

This weekend we’re swapping removal trucks for racing cars as we’re heading north to Knockhill in Scotland to cheer on Team Archers Lion Car 79. 🏁

It’s the first time the team has raced at Knockhill for a very long time, so it’s a bit of an unknown. That’s all part of the challenge though, and we’re looking forward to seeing how they get on.

As a family business, we’ve always believed in supporting local people and local talent, whether that’s in our communities or out on the race circuit. We’re proud to back the team and wish everyone involved the very best of luck.

Safe racing, enjoy the weekend, and we’ll all be keeping an eye on the results!

Good luck from everyone at Archers Removals. 🏁

With the World Cup getting everyone talking football again, here's a Yorkshire fact for you. ⚽️

Did you know that Yorkshire has produced more England international footballers than any other county? From Sheffield to Leeds, York to Middlesbrough, Yorkshire has a proud history of producing players who've gone on to represent their country on football's biggest stage.

Just like a good football team, a successful house move is all about teamwork.

Everyone has a job to do. From the survey and planning, to the packing, loading and unloading, it's only when the whole team works together that everything runs smoothly. You won't win a World Cup with eleven goalkeepers, and you won't have a stress-free move without an experienced team working together.
After more than 107 years of moving homes and businesses across North Yorkshire, we've learnt that preparation, communication and teamwork are the winning combination every time.

If you're planning a move, we'd be delighted to help.

Another delivery of paper tape has arrived today.

It might not be the most exciting thing, but it’s all part of something we take seriously at Archers, reducing our use of plastic wherever we can.

As a business, we’re committed to minimising our impact on the environment and are proud to hold ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management.

In simple terms, it means we’re constantly looking at ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency and make better use of resources across the business. From fuel usage and recycling to the materials we use every day, it’s all part of the bigger picture.

Some of the ways we’re working towards a more sustainable future include:

• Recycling paper from our data destruction services through UK-based recycling facilities.

• Supporting both the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and The Woodland Trust through their tree planting programmes.

• Supporting local charities and community projects.

• Employing local people and helping to support the local economy.

• Using local suppliers wherever possible.

• Reusing and recycling packing materials wherever we can.

For a family business that’s been serving the area for over 107 years, looking after our local environment is just as important as looking after our customers.

Every small step helps.

Random Fact Friday 🌈

One of the first things many people do when they move into a new home is start thinking about decorating. New walls, new colours, and the chance to put your own stamp on the place. 🧑‍🎨

That got us thinking about colours and rainbows. Most of us learnt at school that there are seven colours in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But originally, things weren’t quite so clear cut.

When Isaac Newton studied light through a prism, he decided to split what we might simply call purple into two colours, indigo and violet. Why? Many historians believe it was because the number seven held special significance for him. So the rainbow we know today became seven colours instead of six.

In fact, if you look closely at the cover of Pink Floyd’s famous Dark Side of the Moon album, you’ll only see the original six colours.

Speaking of decorating, here’s a practical moving tip from us. 💡Tins of paint are best transported in your own car where possible, or taken to your local recycling centre if they’re no longer needed. Paint can leak, spill and cause damage to furniture and boxes, so it’s always worth planning ahead.

A little preparation goes a long way when moving home.

There is a reason we’ve been moving homes and businesses for over 107 years and four generations.
