No.8 John of Gaunt was originally built oil fired. With the rising cost of oil and the oil burning was very noisy led to a conversion to coal in 2008. The oil buring equipment was retained.

The locomotive has since been overhauled to be much more efficient. Taken with the increasingly hot summer periods and increased fire risk a decision has been made to allow No.8 burn oil again.

The design is such that it will be possible to switch between coal burning and oil burning in a 48-72 hours.

Work is already underway in the workshops at Aylsham to make a new oil tank. The grate and controls from the original system will be used.

This will allow year round steam operation without the fire risk.

Today the railway celebrated a landmark with our longest serving member of staff having completed 30 years service with the Company.

Neal joined in May 1996 and has risen to become our Operations Manager, not only this he is a qualified Steam and diesel Driver as well as a guard and Permanent Way Supervisor. In addition he is a controller - person who oversees the radio signalling of all train movements on the railway. This is an image is of youthful Neal at work as controller in the 1990's showing just how much this was different back then from our digital computer control of today!

Congratulations Neal and Thank You

A great conclusion to our Everything Goes weekend. No.6, 7 and 8 triple header powering away from Buxton this evening.

Thanks must go to the volunteers and staff who worked so hard to make this happen, but not forgetting our visitors without whom we could not continue.

If you weren't able to join us this weekend, we will do it all again over the weekend of 26th & 27th September 2026. We look forward to seeing you then!
