Oxford History Tours

Oxford History Tours The Real Walk and Talk I started welcoming travellers and organising itineraries while living in deep rural southern France.

In 2009 I co-founded Cathar Country Tours which offered top drawer tours about the Albigensian Crusade and the Langue d’Oc. While I wove the itineraries, curated the restaurants and ensured a seamless experience for our guests, my partner delivered a second to none historical tour of the region’s history. I realised that some of the travellers who approached me knew the work of local authors who w

ere friends and acquaintances of ours. Experts in their field and connoisseurs of France, they included Richard Stanley, Henry-Lincoln, Rupert Soskin and Tim Wallace-Murphy. With these local friends and acquaintances I created opportunities for authors and readers to meet and discover the region’s scenes of famous historic events together. Today I bring my infectious enthusiasm and local knowledge to Oxford. With Oxford History Tours you can be sure that your experience will be carefully crafted and accompanied by an experienced guide, an expert in their field. An Art History and History BA hons, an Associate of the British Institute of Tourist Guiding and a member of the British Guild of Tourist Guides Sophie is also an ITG certified French speaking guide.

The English have always had a soft spot for freedom. We fought civil wars about it, wrote philosophical treatises about it, and applied the principle to pubs.

A free house is simply a pub free to choose its own beers rather than being tied to a brewery.

Effectively means careful selections and forays is to different brews.

John Locke would probably have approved.

If anyone asks for evidence that women’s history is often overlooked from Oxford’s story, you only have to stand on Beaumont Street.

Right here, at the site of the now-demolished Beaumont Palace, Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of medieval Europe’s most powerful women; gave birth to not one, but two future kings of England: Richard I (“the Lionheart”) and John.

Yet today there is barely a trace on the street itself. No grand marker, no obvious monument just a low-key plaque and a story most people walk straight past.

It’s a striking contrast with how Oxford chooses to monumentalise Iman people elsewhere

Oxford’s women’s history is there, but it’s often hidden in plain sight.

This is exactly why the Oxford History Tour premium range includes a tailored women’s history strand bringing these overlooked stories back into focus, from medieval queens to reformers, thinkers, and the women who shaped the city from behind the scenes.

Some of our Muses are missing! Where have those naughty statues from the top of the Clarendon Building gone? Off on their travels to see new places, meet new muses? Well, no. Removed for conservation in 2023, several of the muses have been conserved or newly cast in lead. Three of the statues will be on display in Blackwell Hall: Clio representing History (original lead statue), Calliope representing Epic Poetry (lead reproduction) and Polyhymnia representing Rhetoric (original statue). Exhibition runs from 23 May – 4 September 2026 in the Blackwell Hall at the Weston Library.
