We started this page to be a genuinely useful, honest corner of the internet for anyone thinking about travel, whether that's a big family holiday, a quiet weekend away, or just wanting a real person to ask a question to instead of scrolling through endless comparison sites.

Be honest. How many browser tabs have you had open trying to book a holiday? Five? Ten? The kind where you've lost track of which hotel had the good reviews and which one had the dodgy pool photos?

It's exhausting, and it doesn't have to be that way.

There's a strange idea floating around that using a travel consultant is somehow a treat, something a bit indulgent, when actually it's the opposite. It's the sensible option. It's handing over the hours of comparing, second-guessing and re-reading reviews at 11pm to someone who does this for a living.

That's exactly what Ali and Clare do. Not just finding you a holiday, but doing the actual legwork. Checking the details that matter, working out what suits your family, your budget, your worries, and your must-haves, and coming back with options that are already sensible rather than a list of links for you to sift through yourself.

No hours lost comparing flight times across four different sites. No wondering if that "5 star" resort is actually five star, or five star according to someone with very low standards. No guessing whether the accessible room is actually accessible, or just labelled that way.

It's not about being unable to book a holiday yourself. It's about not having to spend your evenings doing it when someone else can take that stress away entirely.

Well, that's the bank holiday done and dusted. Back to school in less than a week, and summer suddenly feels like it's packing its bags.

There's always that slightly deflating Tuesday-after-a-bank-holiday feeling, isn't there? School shoes need buying, routines are creeping back in, and the long lazy days are officially over.

But here's the bit that makes it easier. October half-term isn't far off, and Christmas trips are already being booked by the savvy ones among us.

So while the summer holidays might be over, there's absolutely no reason not to start dreaming about the next getaway already. Doesn't have to be big. Doesn't have to be far. Just something to look forward to on the other side of the school run.

There's a certain kind of pressure that creeps in around travel. The idea that a good traveller has been everywhere, that your passport should look impressively battered, that somehow three days in Cornwall doesn't quite count in the same way as three weeks in Southeast Asia.

It's nonsense, and we'd like to gently put it to bed.

Travel was never meant to be a checklist. Nobody's handing out medals for country counts. What actually matters is whether the trip meant something to you, whatever that trip was.

Maybe it's a week in Devon that gave you the first proper rest you'd had in months. Maybe it's a city break somewhere an hour's flight away that turned out to be exactly what you needed. Maybe it's returning to the same place year after year because it feels like home, not because you haven't "explored enough."

None of that is a lesser version of travel. It's just travel, done in a way that's right for you.

We see this a lot with families juggling additional needs, people managing anxiety around flying, or anyone who simply doesn't want their holiday to feel like an endurance test. A slower pace, a familiar destination, a shorter trip, these aren't compromises. They're valid choices.

So if you've ever felt a bit sheepish saying "we just went to..." instead of naming somewhere far-flung, stop. Your holiday doesn't need anyone else's approval.

Nobody plans for a delay, but knowing what you're entitled to makes it a lot less stressful when it happens.

Here's the honest, plain-English version.

If your flight departs from the UK, you're covered
This applies whichever airline you fly with, and it stays true even on connecting flights, as long as they were booked as one journey.

The "right to care" kicks in first

Once your delay passes a certain point, depending on the length of the flight, the airline has to look after you. That means food, drinks and a way to keep in touch. If the delay runs overnight, they should also sort a hotel and transport there and back. This applies regardless of why the flight was delayed.

Compensation is a separate thing, and it depends on why

If your flight is delayed 3 hours or more at your final destination, and the cause was within the airline's control, you may be entitled to a fixed payout of £220, £350 or £520 per passenger, depending on how far the flight was.

The key phrase is "within the airline's control." A technical fault or crew issue usually counts. Genuinely extraordinary circumstances, like severe weather, generally don't, which is often the bit that catches people out.

A voucher isn't your only option

If a delay means your trip is no longer viable and you decide not to travel, you're entitled to a full cash refund, not just a voucher. Airlines sometimes offer the voucher first, but you don't have to accept it.

So where does travel insurance come in?

This is the bit people often get muddled. Your flight delay rights come from the airline, not your insurance policy. Travel insurance is there for the knock-on stuff those rights don't cover: missed connections with a different provider, extra costs that aren't reimbursed, or disruption that doesn't meet the airline's compensation threshold.

The short version: know your rights first, because that's often the quicker and more direct route. Insurance is your backup for everything else.

Quick one for today. When did you last actually check your passport's expiry date?

Not "I think it's fine", actually checked it.

Here's why it matters more than people realise. Lots of countries don't just want your passport to be valid for the dates you're travelling. Many require it to have at least six months left on it from your date of entry, sometimes longer. So a passport that looks perfectly fine on paper can still cause problems at check-in or border control if it's cutting it close.

It catches families out more than you'd think, especially with children's passports. Kids' passports are only valid for five years rather than ten, so they run out faster than anyone remembers, usually right around the time you've booked something exciting.

If you're thinking about half-term, Christmas markets, or anything later in the year, now is a genuinely good time to open that drawer and check every passport in the house, not just yours.

Renewals can take longer than expected too, so sorting it early means one less thing to worry about closer to the time.

☀️ WHAT IF THE BEST OF SUMMER... IS ACTUALLY AFTER SUMMER?

Everyone talks about July and August when they're planning a sunshine holiday.

But there's a reason September is one of our favourite times of year to travel.

Across many Mediterranean destinations, you'll often still find beautifully warm days, while the sea has had the whole summer to heat up. 🌊

The huge summer crowds begin to disappear, temperatures can be much more comfortable for actually exploring, and once the peak school-holiday period has passed, you may find some much better-value options too.
