Situated in glorious North Devon in the heart of Exmoor, we’re the only steam railway in the UK where passengers travel in Victorian railway carriages designed in the 1890s. "The Last Narrow Gauge Railway Adventure"

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway - a two-foot narrow gauge line meandering 19 miles across North Devon - opened as an independ

ent line in 1898, but closed only 37 years later, then owned by the Southern Railway. All of the original trackbed was sold off piecemeal, and the rolling stock was mostly scrapped, although some fragments have survived, and are being put back together, as is the trackbed, whenever sections become available. A mile of the original line has now reopened, and mainly through the efforts of an army of volunteers, and supporters, the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Trust - a registered educational trust - aims to restore as much as possible of the 19 miles of the original, again linking Barnstaple to the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth by rail. We’re celebrating volunteers’ week as well this, the 75th year of the Heritage Railway movement. Our dedicated team of volunteers don’t just keep the trains running they undertake a myriad of essential tasks in and around our railway.

One of the things we pride ourselves on is our friendly customer experience. If you like working with the public and can enthuse our visitors perhaps a role working in our ticket office or in our tearoom might be for you?

There's just one more sleep until you can meet our famous fundraising dogs - Henry and his nephew / apprentice Bertie at our special 'Meet Henry and Bertie Day'.

There'll be fluffy fun, cuddles and photo opportunities at Woofy Bay with our Golden Retriever duo. Bring along your doggy friends (on their leads) and don't forget they get to travel free in 3rd class as do any under 14s!

The 'Coaster' bus service (no. 300) is up and running from Ilfracombe to Lynmouth and, Lynmouth to Minehead.

It's a two stage journey, but you can do each for £3 single (adult) meaning you get to see Exmoor from a whole new vantage point as well as getting to us at the Woody Bay. stop.

Note: only the Minehead to Lynmouth service is open-top.
