Some thoughts from the heart…
I’ve been working in passenger transport for twelve years now. It used to be in Hong Kong; today, it’s in the UK. But perhaps what I do in the UK shouldn’t really be called a “limousine service” at all. The customers are different, the nature of the service is different, and almost everything about the job has changed.
Back then, maintaining a professional image was essential. Everything had to be done properly and according to procedure. You could genuinely want to go the extra mile for someone, but there were always rules and boundaries to follow.
Now that I’m in the UK, although the service may still be described as “airport transfers”, in reality it’s something completely different.
Most of the people I serve here have made a life-changing decision to leave everything familiar behind and build a new future for themselves and their families. What they need isn’t a polished corporate image or a luxurious car. What they need is sincerity, genuine service, and a vehicle that can comfortably accommodate their family, their luggage and everything they are bringing with them.
It’s simple, practical and genuine.
Moving to another country is never an easy decision. And when you’re relocating as an entire family — with elderly parents, young children, and sometimes even cats and dogs — every single step can be difficult. The pressure can be far greater than people realise.
A few days ago, I came across a worried Hongkonger in an online group. Just three days before they were due to travel, the transport company they had booked informed them that they could no longer provide the service.
The company said they could arrange another operator instead, but the customer would have to pay an additional £70.
From a customer’s point of view, that understandably felt unfair. If a service has already been agreed and the problem has arisen on the supplier’s side, why should the customer be expected to bear the additional cost?
When the customer quite reasonably questioned this, the response they received left them feeling looked down upon:
“It’s only £70. It’s not that much, is it?”
While listening to what had happened, the customer told me that they had already started to lose faith in fellow Hongkongers in the UK. They hadn’t even arrived yet, and this was already happening. They couldn’t help wondering what else they might encounter once they got here.
That really stayed with me.
I know how hard I’ve been working to build a future here, and I’ve seen so many friends around me doing exactly the same — working hard, helping one another and carrying forward the Lion Rock Spirit that Hongkongers have always been proud of.
So it was difficult for me to stand by and watch the reputation of Hongkongers being damaged by the actions of a small minority who seem to put money before responsibility.
I decided to do what I could within my own profession. I gave the customer my personal assurance that I would arrange the journey myself.
Hopefully, through my actions, I can restore at least a little of their confidence in fellow Hongkongers.
I hope I can live up to my word, and I sincerely wish you and your family a smooth journey, every success, and a happy new life in the UK.
A final note:
At first, I was genuinely angry. I wanted to write an entire post calling out the company concerned and speaking up for the customer.
But after thinking about it, I decided there was no need.
There’s little point in trying to destroy someone else’s livelihood. However, I sincerely hope the company takes a serious look at the way it operates.
If you intend to continue working in this industry, please show your customers the basic level of responsibility they deserve. Take the time to obtain the proper licence required to carry passengers for hire and reward, and make sure you have the appropriate commercial insurance in place.
Please don’t mislead people to the point where you eventually start believing your own story.
Once again, I’m asking you: please show your customers some responsibility. Don’t allow your actions to damage the reputation of Hongkongers who are working hard to build an honest life here.
Please. 🙏🏻
