Lets talk rubbish,
Fly tipping (also known as illegal dumping) is the unauthorised disposal of any type of waste on land or any site which has no license to accept it.
This type of crime is on the rise across the UK, 1.26 million incidents recorded in fact between 2024/2025 which is 9% more than the previous year and its only getting higher. On average 3446 fly tipping incidents are being reported each day, that's one every 25 seconds.
Why is it starting to be common? It can be a range of many things, these are the top four reasons:
Avoiding fees - Businesses & individuals avoid legal commercial tipping fees to pay for landfill tax & correct disposal charges
Rogue Traders - Dishonest removal services charge local residents a very cheap price to take away any residual waste, but instead illegally dump is in a field or the side of the road
Tip restrictions - All Councils across the UK charge set prices on certain items, mainly builders waste which pushes people away to try find a price that is so cheap its too good to be true
Laziness - Rather than taking residual waste to an authorised site, individuals choose the quickest, easiest option which raises costs to your local council which therefore puts a strain on services where funding is needed
So how do you spot a fly tipper?
Look for anything that may be suspicious, unmarked vans, working in quiet areas at odd hours, individuals unloading items in unlit spots & traders only cash only removals without showing the correct license are some red flags to keep an eye out for.
They charge you a very cheap price to take away waste, if it's too good to be true, it most likely is. It may cost you a bit more to pay for a legitimate business but it will save you the risk of facing hefty fines of up to £5000 from your local council if it traces back to you.
Rogue operators not only don't show proof of a license, they also refuse to provide any paperwork of any form that trails back to them. These can be invoices, receipts or waste transfer notes which has the individuals business address.
